Cocktails with Courtney ~ July 2000

Despite the continuing illogical and odd experiences we've had in dealing with restaurant and club owners, the July Cocktails with Courtney went on without a hitch at the elegant-looking Etoile in the Lombardy Hotel. More than 450 guests came out in the rain to sip some wine and meet other networkers. NY1 was there doing a piece on The Art of Schmoozing, which will be aired sometime late next week. A reporter and photographer from MAX magazine and a reporter from an Amsterdam, The Netherlands, magazine arrived to see how Silicon Alley new media socialites work a room. We even had some "old-timers" like Howard Greenstein (Sorceron), media trainer Mary Dawne Arden and Tery Spataro. Brian Stengel (managing director of eColony), introduced me to some of his friends and colleagues. Another West-coaster, Jim Marver of VantagePoint Venture Partners, was in town, as he often is, for business. PriceWaterhouseCoopers partner Murray Alter stopped by to say "hello," and Charles Molineaux (NEW Show on CNN) was chatting for a bit with Anne Shelton (AppNet). Blaze Ventures co-founder and CEO Jonathan Henes and co-founder and CSO Melissa Gerardi were therewith branding consultant David Boorstin. Amy Brownstein of her own shindig came and schmoozed with John McGann (JDM Interactive).

Audiobase, the sponsor for the night, had a team out from their base office in Sausilito, CA. As I waited for CEO and co-founder David Haynes to join me on the dance floor for a quick speech, I entertained requests for favorite songs. Jim Sosnicky (the Village Voice) called out "It's Raining Men," and so I did my best to comply. Things went from bad to worse when I was requested to sing an old Nancy Sinatra favorite, "These Boots are Made for Walkin." Fortunately David came to my rescue and the guests were saved from further damage to their eardrums! We kept the tunes to Ella Fitzgerald and Tony Bennett after that, and the evening went on with most everyone staying till the tail end. As we announced at the party, we're beginning our members-only Cocktails with Courtney. Check out our website about our Inner Circle membership options so you can partake of these smaller soirees.

Digital Club Festival Floats

With Jupiter's Plug-In conference and the Digital Club Festival occurring this week as well, there were all sorts of people in town and music-related festivities to choose from. Tuesday night held the Digital
Club Festival closing night party at Float. As I arrived, Digital Club Network CEO Andrew Rasiej introduced me to Greg Scholl, principal managing member of Carlin Ventures. Cyber-photographer du momente, Carl Saytor, and I reminisced about the MTVi party months ago with fire trucks and mob scenes. Jim Rich, testing manager of Clickthings.com was downstairs, and we chatted amidst boogiers. Patty Abt, who works at the Museum of Natural History, was at the party with a new media graphic artists and comments that the "party was tragic and desperate with pre- and post- disillusionment." Quite a statement from someone whose friends were all punked-out and jivin' and grindin' hips in conga-line fashion. But it was true, nonetheless. The young, skinny, New York nightlife crowd persona pervaded the blue-light, heavy bass-soaked club. And if you weren't careful, you could get soaked yourself in a Cosmopolitan bath as these young hipsters paraded around carelessly pointing with their drinks.

MTVi draws another massive crowd

After a chat or two uptown at Float, I headed downtown to Eastern Soho,
where MTVi was holding its soiree of the summer at Chaos on Houston
Street. And chaotic it was! The mob scene outside didn't prevent me from
entry, thanks to Mark Pasetsky for catching site of me at the door. I made
quick and headed into the club with Jumpcut.com's director of
communications Denise Hungerford and account executive Peter Ciriello.
"Having-a-good-week Nick Butterworth" surveyed from a balcony the mass of
young, skinny, uber sleek-chic-kids below, with approval and commented
about how he can still draw them in Jumpcut's CEO Mark Scarpa, in a
flattering blue dress shirt, introduced me to some friends as I made my
way 'round the is-this-thing-fire-approved balcony to chat with Netmix.com
investor Todd Georgen and SonicNet's Kamuti Kiteme. The joint was jumpin'
and jump did I to be well-rested for the rest of the week.

Yahoo! Internet Life Music Awards

The front row had models Lauren Hutton, Molly Simms, Chuck D, Russell Simmons (Def Jam records, Phat Farm), Nick Butterworth (MTVi) and Sandra Bernhard. Just behind them were judges, sponsors and other luminaries in the Music and Online world. I looked up at the red gilded ceiling and walls, rich in history and stories despite their decay.
And what, pray tell, was the occasion to bring together such a glittery group of people? The third Annual Yahoo! Internet Life Music Awards, that's what!

As I graced the red-carpeted entrance, I was directed inside to collect myticket. Martha Stewart was upstairs in the VIP room talking with her contingent, and Extra, CNN and Metro were all lined up waiting to talk with the stars as they arrived. As I was walking in, I chatted with Barry Golson (Yahoo! Internet Life editor-in-chief), Ron Bel Bruno (Y!IL senior editor), Jesse Jacobs (event consultant) and Diane Stefani (Y!IL public relations director). I saw Simon Nuchtern, who produced the video for this night's production, and his wife, Anna, who wore a fabulous blue-green dress with impressive arm and neck bangles.

John Roderick of the Rosen Group introduced me to Scott Dalton (warehouse coordinator, Express Autoparts.com). They'd just come from further inside the club, and it looked daunting... Nick Butterworth (president and CEO,MTVi) and I chatted as we braced ourselves for the charge inside. He told me that he hopes he doesn't have to go on after Prince, like he did last year. "That was a tough act to follow." I'll say. In fact, Prince didn't come this night, but he did create a classic Prince "thank you" video clip that played after he won the "Best Internet-Only Single" category.

Socialite Melissa Blau of Constellation Ventures introduced me to DuncanSheik, and we chatted for a bit with Mark Frieser of Gajin.com (and co-founder of Jupiter.com). Upstairs there were more fashionably attired women and men, now making there way to their seats. The show got started with John Leguizamo getting the crowd excited about the night. Aimee Mann(of her own band and Till Tuesday fame) sang two lovely ballads. Sandra Bernhard and her table were keeping up with the beat by dancing in their chairs. Lauren Hutton and Russell Simmons introduced the nominees for the Best Label Online. Astralwerks won, and the winner exclaimed, "this proves that one geek locked in a closet with no funding, no freelancers ... can create a major label." He thanked his staff and crew and those that made the label as strong as it is.
Doug Lyman and Andrea Davenport presented the Best Music Reference site --UBL.com. Most of the presenters, celebrities, musicians, and other well-know sorts struggled with the teleprompter. I'm not sure if they were goofing at it, but it was pretty ridiculous. Two representatives from the Cavern Club thanked Paul McCartney when he was announced as the winner for the Best Live Music Event online. As one of the recipients said, it was the largest Internet show online in the smallest club in the world."Leguizamo managed to associate one of the two presenters for almost every round with Madonna and oral sex.  Kurt Loder and Sandra Bernhard presented nominees for the Best Artist Site. She hugged David Bowie when he came on stage to accept his award for BowieNet. Bowie said that being in Studio 54 brought back many memories, but that "this was the first time he'd seen this place from a vertical position."

Issac Hayes came out and sang two classics: "Never can say goodbye" and "Walk on By." The stunning triple-threat (actor/dancer/singer) Bebe Neuworth came on stage with the stunning triple-threat(editor-in-chief/boss/leader) Barry Golson to announce the Best Music News Sites. The winners from Billboard were shocked based on the placement of their seats (third-level balcony). Chuck D announced the Best-Unsigned Band -- Red Delicious, who promptly thanked their fans and asked if there was anymore wine. Betsy and Lulu Johnson, the mother-daughter fashion duo, announced the nominees for the Best Fan Site. Betsy -- all dolled up complete in her orange-top poof and sparkly rhinestone baubles, and Luluin her tall, elegant black classic attire, announced the winner -- Painful Convictions, which is Nine Inch Nails's fan site. Yahoo! Internet Life publisher Andrew Kramer came out for a "commercial break," and then Alanis Morissette belted out two numbers, sitting on a stool in a simple purple knit top and slacks. B. Smith and Isaac Hayes announced the Best Internet Only Single (see above for winner), and Russell Simmons and Molly Simms announced the Best Internet-Only Album: Aimee Mann. Aimee proclaimed "God bless the Internet because it's the only way singers like me can make a living." Singer Duncan Sheik and actress Claudia Schearer were the presenters for Best Overall Music Site. Nicholas Butterworth and Jim DePalma of Sonicnet, the winner, stated they "love the people, the winner, stated they "love the people who come to our site. Chuck D, the 1999Online Pioneer, introduced the 2000 Online Pioneer -- David Bowie.

Bowie, whose image and music has transformed over the decades, was always meant to be online, in my opinion. With the creativity and vision he's brought to his work in music and to his endeavors online, he truly is an online pioneer in many ways. BowieNet is the first artist-branded ISP and music site to have a 3D virtual chat environment. There are numerous community features, including diary entries from Bowie, rare music exclusives, recordings and videos. He came out and serenaded us with two ballads and then said, in his thank you acceptance speech "We'll just keep trying. We'll just keep trying to never bore you."

The ceremony ended, and the after-party kicked up. I chatted with Robert Thomason (Washington Post) and Lance Funkhouser (WearAer) afterwards about Bowie's performance and the scope of talent during the night. Not everyone was so impressed with the show, and before Marisa Bowe (Word) and CarlSwanson (New York) stepped out, I chatted with them briefly. William Berlind (The New York Observer) was also far from star-struck, and I chatted with Kelly Ryan (I-Hatch.com) and her husband, Wayne Chavez, (CEO,Chief Customer Advocate, SmartCasual.com) on their way out. Hamptons Country magazine Managing Editor Cindi Cook and her friend Jeff Vikari looked sharp and fashionable, and David Lauren (Ralph Lauren's oldest son)also slithered past the youngsters waiting to see a celeb.

Having been to a few awards shows myself, I understand the challenging aspects of streamlined production. And I think Yahoo! Internet Life put on a good show. When you're bringing together music and fashion celebrities, when you're in the historic Studio 54, when you're putting on a live webcast -- sure there are bound to be glitches. But I love being a part of all these histories in the making.

Cocktails in Merry New England

Jolly Ole England was the setting for Cocktails with Courtney this past week, and despite an overcast sky, most everyone who came was in a sunny mood. Sponsored by W Hotels, IBM's Web Integrator Initiative and the DERA (Defence Evaluation and Research Agency), the event lit up the Retox lounge with aromatic W Hotel travel candles and Jet Lag balm strategically placed around the room. IBM representatives Howard Ross, Michael Mauchline and Adrian Kohn won favor with their IBM-branded tennis balls (from their official sponsorship of this week's Wimbolden) and a raffle of a Palm and Thinkpad. DERA stood on its solid story and had printouts near the door for interested guests. Mike Parkins, DERA’s business group manager of Civil Marine Systems, told me that he had the obligatory "minders" with him. Simon Chapman, project manager of the DERA systems & software engineering center, was on hand to make sure that Mike said in his speech only what he had approval to say. Despite the seemingly restrictive environment, all the DERA people I met were quite jovial, nice, exceedingly polite and smart.

Among some of the first few people I met were James Baker, deputy editor of MIS magazine, Roger Dennis from World Com and Dion Jerling of Orange20. David Sparks, Mark West and Gregory Newman from Elan recruitment were also settling in before the masses showed up. I introduced myself to Ian Montgomery and Sarah De Jonge of MRI International and Patricia Walsh of Forrester, just as the rest of the Forrester clan arrived -- Imogen Harris, Mike Shaw, Tom Bausemer and Emma Taylor. James Aitken and Iain Starr of Seattle-based Avenue A told me some people in their office forwarded them the invitation and recommended they check out this New York-initated cocktail party.

James Ware of DotHill.com, Simon Devonshire of the Yellow Submarine and Rajen Lakhani of SmarterWork.com were among some of the other new faces I met at this hard-to-find-but "swish" venue in Covent Garden. Katia Verresen, Garage.com's managing director of European bizdev, and Financial Times’ growing business correspondent Katherine Campbell inquired about the cocktail parties and how I thought this one stacked up against others. Quite well! In the back corner, the team from Pres.co -- Alexander Gray, David Daly, Phil Barryman, Tara Wingfield, Edward Denes, David Watson and Guy Timewell --  were enjoying the endless trays of hors d'oeuvres, and Oven Digital (the firm chosen by W Hotels to redesign their web sites) was out in full force with Nicolas Roope (from the London office), and Steve Cannon and Iram Quraishi (from the NY office). Proving the concept even more -- that a cocktail party in London is truly an international mixer -- Keith Jon Kaplan and Michael Gorman of L90's New York office stopped by for some fun, as did Arly Kjellstad, Sony's director of bizdev & online ventures.

Patrick Spain of Austin-based Hoovers Online encouraged Gehan Talwatte, the company's MD for Europe, to come. And while chatting with him about Spain's catfish collection, we met up with Andrew Iain Newcombe of Doubleclick and Julian Ha, a London Cocktails with Courtney regular! Maggie Rosen, our contributor for The Cyber Scene in London, came by and introduced me to some friends -- Glenda Stone of Busygirl.co.uk. Sean Lynch of W Hotels spoke about the chain's upcoming openings of London and Union Square NY hotels. Pal Myrvold of Pock and Richard Smith, Kenneth McLeish, Robert Walker and Sam Tuck of Barclays Bank were there to network. Harry Becher and I caught up on all the news since my last cocktail party in fair London, held at his club, Rock. The party continued on strong, well after its described time, and when the guests did eventually take their leave, I went out for some fine Chinese food in London's China Town with my DERA sponsors and Lu Barron of Tank Management.

A Concrete Space

Similar to their older offices, but "much cooler," Concrete Media's
CEO Aaron Cohen showed me around their new concrete offices in the
Starrett Lehigh building on 26th Street and 11th Avenue on Tuesday,
August 15. The mustard-yellow paneled bookshelves above the rows of
metal desk units conveys the campus-like atmosphere that Cohen was
going after. Smooth circular bathroom tiles paved the way to
fiberglass pod-conference rooms. The space-age conference phones
were still sitting in their boxes, waiting for deep new media
voices to boom out strategies and plans over it. As Aaron
explained, the company will be changing its name to Concrete Inc.
in an effort to establish itself as the intellectual center of
Silicon Alley. The space, designed by architects Specht Harpmann
and constructed by MBI, flows throughout the floor and includes
two terraces -- one will be enclosed -- for parties and catered
events.Perks for Concrete workers include select dinner parties on
the terrace and corporate membership to Chelsea Piers! As Aaron
spoke to the guests and announced unofficially the company’s
new name --Concrete Inc. -- I sipped a seltzer water with
Inside.com's director of bizdev Andrew Gelman and Colby Hall.
Before ducking out, Shopguide.com Inc. COO Albert Crane said
"hello" and I spied Concrete's chief production officer Kit Cody
and director of technology Julie Hsu.

Last week's edition incorrectly identified Vault.com as a spin-off from Concrete Media. Vault.com is not a spin off of Concrete Media, it is an independently owned and operated career site.

"I'm writing to clear up a confusion regarding Vault.com and Concrete Media. In your last newsletter you state "The Concrete Media party crowned this party week at their fabulous lofts on 26th St. CEO Aaron Cohen was talking to Chip Austin, CEO of incubator i-Hatch ...and then updated me on what Concrete Media is about these days, having spun-off Vault.com." Vault.com is not a spin off of Concrete Media. We are an independently owned and operated career site. I think you have confused us with another company. Would you please make a correction in your next newsletter."

The Myers Forum for Interactive Television Development ~ by Mary Dawne Arden

The Myers Forum for Interactive Television Development was held on July 25
and 26 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York. More than a thousand Media
Industry attendees and leaders attended a two-day, action-packed forum of
panels and demos about how PTV (Personal TV) is racing ahead. Myers
Reports predicts this burgeoning industry to surge to $32.1 Billion by
2006. The Forum is created by Jack Myers CEO and Chief Economist of Myers
Reports, which publishes syndicated, proprietary and custom research
reports for investment decisions related to the Media Industry.

One of the Highlights of the Forum was the award to Dr. Frank Stanton
(former president of CBS ≠ TV and one of the pioneers and great media
leaders of the 20th Century) as "Media Executive of the Millennium."
Companies that had a presence at this forum were Microsoft/WebTV,
Microsoft TV, Replay TV, Yamaha Disklavier Pianos, ICTV, Discovery.com.
Worldnow, Gamut Interactive, Worldgate, Random/Order, Canal+US, Wink and
others.

Some Myers Forecasts:
- ITV will drive significant expansion of e-commerce revenues, especially
in relation to TV programming and advertisers.

- The Internet and TV will become increasingly integrated, with more than
two-thirds of all adults saying they would like to receive the Internet
over TV and TV over the Internet.

- Myers Reports launched three new corporate outreach programs at this
Forum:
Focusing on Multi-Cultural, Women Executives and Student initiatives.

The Cyber Scene in DC ~ by Tamar Alexia Fleishman

WASHINGTON WOMEN & THE WEB, SCOPING AND SCOUTS

On July 25th, at precisely Happy Hour o'clock, Capitol Hill's leaders
gathered in the Russel Senate Building's Caucus Room to honor the nine
women Senators: Mikulski, Hutchinson, Feinstein, Boxer, Murray, Snowe,
Collins, Landrieu and Lincoln. Their new book, "Nine and Counting," was
being promoted by women's web giant ivillage.com. Ivillage.com has been at
the forefront in hosting web Presidential debates and other live political
events.

Benefiting from the proceeds of book sales is the Girl Scouts
organization: five of the nine women Senators are former scouts. Their was
a strong scout presence too: there were many girls in uniform, several
scout execs in the "adult" uniform (dark green suit or coat dress,
patterned green and burgundy silk scarf, badges), and many consumed Thin
Mint cookies (who, moi?).

Admirers present included Senators Kennedy and Dodd, along with teenager
Senate pages Jeffrey Kerner and Andrew Jandt.  Jandt winked a "no comment"
when asked if he came to scope out the scene. Kerner piped up with, "I
don't think we're supposed to be here, but women are such valuable . . .
women are so valuable."

For wine and beer, we had Woodbridge Cabernet Sauvignon, Michelob and West
Virginia's Quibell water. At the food buffet, besides the aforementioned
Thin Mints, were fried chicken fingers, cold salmon with capers, sliced
tropical fruits, little piped hors d'oeuvres, domestic cheeses and the
Greek spinach pastry "spanikopita" that was sampled several times by
"those in the know."

One of those "in the know" was preppily attired summer intern Christopher
Kramer, who works for Senator Levin on the Investigations Subcommittee.
This pro-women's rights University of Michigan student was wearing a
special tie that his grandfather gave him on his first day on Capitol
Hill.

The audience of about 250 people applauded the tried-and-true wisdom of
the Senators, who were introduced by Cokie Roberts. One of those
applauding was Admiral Susan Blumenthal, the U.S. Asst. Surgeon General. A
glamorous platinum blonde in her sharp black-and-gold uniform, career
officer Blumenthal is very appreciative of the nine Senators' efforts to
advance the issue of women's health.

Everyone received goody bags containing a copy of "Nine and Counting," the
latest Ladies Home Journal and the Girl Scout's leadership magazine. An
adorable young Girl Scout in many braids, bows and beads ran after Cokie
Roberts to get an autograph. Roberts demurred, "I'm not a Senator!"  Well,
that's why the book's called "Nine and Counting ... only nine women are.

Bits, Bytes and Bar

Lisa Novitt of the Downtown Alliance sent in this recap of their Bits,Bytes and Bar on Monday, July 24. Held at the Vaults of Vine, downtown LawFirm, Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy was the gracious sponsor of thisparty. Ignoring the bad weather and the fact that it was a Monday night, over 400 people came to partake in the festivities. There were two bars, cutesy finger foods passed around on trays plus a pasta station, whichserved ziti, tortellini and ravioli.

Amongst the upbeat crowd were downtown high-techies such as Justin Modelof VentureSurf (who recently opened their NYC office on 26 Broadway),Lloyd Fremed, from PSINET, Michael Kawochka (TheGlobe.com) andnon-downtown high-tech representatives like Bill Squitieri (Crain's), AdamCastro (eWomp) and a big group from Doremus Advertising. Other regularsmaking an appearance were Bernardo Joselevich, Sherry Riesner (NYNMA) andElizabeth Geary-Archer (Out of the Box Marketing). Christine Schoregge, from the NYC Economic Development Corporation (and who never misses aBits, Bytes & Bar) told me that this space felt "very Tribeca-ish."

Web-Dive 2000

Unlike any other weekend, on one particular Saturday (July 22, 2000, in
fact) I decided to venture out of my apartment at 5:30 am, stumble down
21st Street, hail a cab and join Peter Shankman (president of
GeekFactory.com) and the Silicon Alley Web Divers for a day of skydiving
and socializing. When I arrived on the corner of 36th Street and 6th
Avenues, I immediately thought "of all the events Courtney sends me to,
why must I jump from a plane, only to report for the New York cyber
scene?" But soon all my worries were diminished when I met Christina
Pecori (ewomp.com). She introduced me to her co-workers and friends: Alan
Friedman (business development), Brad Powers (vice president, marketing)
and Chirag Chaman (CTO). We all analyzed our feelings about plummeting to
the earth at top speeds, and what would happen if the chute did not open.
Christina forced us to think positive, thank goodness, and we soon began
to look forward to the experience.

Filtering into the bus, we were handed a goodie-bag full of useful items.
Icon Nicholson donated disposable cameras to capture our fear as we headed
toward earth.  Bla-Bla.com donated our official Web-Dive 2000 T-shirts,
Mimeo.com donated footballs and frisbees to take our mind off the fear,
and finally, my favorite--ewomp.com donated foot massage cream for
after-landing recuperation. While on the bus, I chatted for a bit with
Dirk Smillie, a reporter from Forbes.

When we arrived at Skydive Sussex, www.skydivesussex.com, we were greeted
by Bud Mazeiko, who has successfully completed more than 4000 jumps! Wow!
Since we were jumping in tandem with an instructor, we were given
instructions on how to exit the plane and to throw back our arms when your
instructor tapped us on the shoulders. Then you fly!  It was brief and to
the point.  Soon the first plane took off.  Waiting patiently on the
ground, I became increasingly excited and scared. Christina offered
support throughout the morning.  Finally, my turn! Well, I'm here to
report that I survived the jump, as did all 69 of us web-divers.  Flying
through the air from 10,000 feet above reminds you about living in the
moment.  I was greeted at the landing field by all other jumpers and
soon-to-be jumpers.  When Jessica Ashbrook (PR associate, JUNO) offered me
a ride back to Manhattan, I "jumped" at the opportunity. Love these
events!
