What we can learn from each other - Swedish American Biotech event

The quality of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce (SACCNY) event on October 31 at the Citibank Auditorium was impressive. Comments from everyone in attendance were of praise for the high-caliber speakers, their approachability throughout the day and the quality of information doled out in presentations and panels.

After a welcome and introduction by Ambassador Jan Eliasson, Henry Gooss and Dr. Ronald Krall, Krall spoke of their new drug that treats the "non-small cells" in lung cancer, Iressa, which offers the promise of a real improvement of the quality of life for lung cancer. Dr. Krall came to Astra Zeneca as a physician by training but who wanted to help a large number of people instead of just one-by-one. Working in biotechnology and developing new drugs to help people is a way for him to do that.

Astra Zeneca CEO Sir Tom McKillop spoke in the morning to the audience's delight. The Next panel, with Jan Lundberg, Carl Feldbaum and Mathias Uhlen on today's drug discoveries and human impact was also a hot topic. Scientist and Columbia University Journalism School student Magdelena Eriksson commented on the quality of the speakers.

The speakers addressed such topics as trying to find the cure for malaria, a lofty and noble idea that they were also actually in the process of trying to pursue. One guest felt the biotech market in terms of investments was more mature here. There certainly is a difference in how startups are invested in. American investors are more tolerant of risk and will go into a company as a seed or initial investor, but may not invest in the long haul. Swedish investors, on the other hand, are less likely to invest in startups, but when they do, they're in it for the long haul. They'll stay with the company and MAKE it work!

North Carolina Biotechnology Center president and CEO Leslie Alexandre commented on the high degree of collaboration she saw in Swedish biotech firms and their investors. She also noted the difference of ownership between Swedish and American inventors. She thought it was very interesting to learn that the Swedish inventors own their technology in a more straight forward mode whereas here it is typically the University that owns the technology or invention.

Mathias Uhlen also talked about his Boston-based firm, E-pill, thus named for the electronic aspects to pill taking. Their target market are adults who are taking care of their elderly parents, which, as we know about demographics, is a large percentage of the population. Sometimes there is the issue of making sure our elder loved ones take their medication. E-pill designed a coffee-maker-type machine that will dispense the pills at the time they are supposed to be taken and remind them up to half-an-hour. If the parent doesn't take it right away, then the pill will be put away, so the parent can't stash them and then overdose, if they're inclined to do so. It stores up to a month's worth of medication. The company has also designed a wristwatch that will vibrate every three hours to remind youngsters to go to the bathroom. This watch, with its reminder, is meant to help train young ones to go on a regular basis, so they don't wet the bed or have other accidents.

The distinguished researcher Olle Isaksson and Investor AB managing director Henry Gooss chatted afterwards about researching stem cells and how Isaksson is convinced they will discover cures to diseases like Parkinsons disease. The Swedish government has a novel approach and is globalizing and modernizing its research.

Uhlen thinks there needs to be more focus on proteins and developing drugs to target malignant cells. Gooss spoke highly of Sir Tom McKillop's speech, who, he said, had intelligent insights and shared the panel while he directed it's flow as well.

Based on the overall comments from people, the SACCNY offers compelling, noteworthy speakers and interesting panels. To find out more visit: www.saccny.org.

ETA: Now for Drama

The Entertainment Technology Alliance hosted their first conference in New York from October 30 - November 1st. Held at the Tribeca Grand Hotel, it offered compelling panels looking at the technology behind digital effects, how to make a digital film and how to migrate traditional filmmaking into the new technologies.

Of course, it wouldn't be an entertainment conference without some drama, no? So attendees got that and more (like information) at the "Advancements in Technology Changes Movies & TV Forever" panel, moderated by Mayra Landgon Riesman. The Official Correspondent for the Cannes Film Festival Henri Behar commented that the forces driving technology into the entertainment industry must be cautious created and created quite a stir. Other panelists for this charged panel were ABCNEWS.com's Bernard Gershon, iTV Alliance's Ben Mendelson, Bear Stearns' Cliff Friedman, BMI's Richard Conlin and Discreet's Maurice Patel.

Screen Digest senior analyst Patrick Von Sychwoski moderated a panel on What are the new opportunities for Digital Cinema. VIP luncheons and cocktail parties each night helped all the attendees feel like real glamorama big-wigs. How could you not rubbing elbows with the A-list people they had in such a sumputous environment?! More ETA's coming your way at; www.etaexpo.com

Good Times

The last few weeks have brought a number of excellent networking and learning opportunities for professionals in the city whatever your interest. Entertainment Chiefs in TV met on Tuesday, October 29th at the Waldorf-Astoria for the International Radio & Television Society Foundation. Guests heard from experts like Gail Berman of Fox, Jordan Levin of the WB, Susan Lyne of ABC, Dawn Ostroff of UPN, Nancy Tellem of CBS and Jeff Zucker of NBC. Those interested in children and media benefited from the Center for Communication's evening on "Adventures in Children's Media" on October 22nd at HBO's offices. Talented writers, technologists and marketers applied and plied for jobs in children's television and digital media.

Another monthly networking group is in town, and recruiters and entrepreneurs showed up for nPost.com's Networking nBeer event at the Coffee Shop Bar (http://www.npost.com) while Brooklynites got another chance to rub elbows and schmooze at Digital NYC and Broadband Brooklyn's "OctoberFest at Broadband Brooklyn Bar Night" at the Brooklyn Brewery. Brewskies and hearty treats from the Old World filled those bellies while the tunee of modern music filled the ear drums.

"Think of the market like an ocean. It's changing every single day all over the world." It was a nice visual to think of something that usually can seem frightening and complex to a novice (the market, not the ocean). Statements like that, and others, were how the savvy Kathryn O'Hagan spoke to the guests at her seminar on October 23rd at the Haelth Spa in Soho. It was a"haelthy" night indeed, crisp apples to munch on while getting good financial advice. Afterwards Haelth Spa COO Pamela Damsky provided an overview of this full-service health center. They do research on health topics, offer exercise classes (yoga, pilates, etc) and acupuncture along with nutritional counseling, massage and more! (http://www.haelth.com/)

Ritzy MOUSE

High School reunions always have an element of competition to see who's gained weight, lost hair or what tragedy's befallen the Most Likely To Succeed. But MOUSE.org's annual events are like High School reunions where everyone always comes back looking great and is doing interesting things. Such was the case at their 4th Annual MOUSE Champions of Technology & Education Awards Reception on October 24th at the Ritz Carlton Battery Park. The ballroom was set up with many stations of delicious options for tasting and based on the buzz in the room, the beverages were helping everyone feel even more warm and toasty.

When it came time to acknowledge the real reason why we were there the awards people couldn't contain their enthusiastic networking until Jupiter Communications' Gene DeRose boomed out from the podium for people to be quiet. MOUSE executive director Sarah Holloway announced that this year's awards were going to the MOUSE Squad High School students of Dewey High School. This year the students of the MOUSE Squad were honored. Alfred Colon, Christie Galla, Brenda Lopez, Steven Narovlianski, Rose Noel and Dayanra Vega were all looking fabulous as they went up to receive their certificates of distinction. These students help with the help desk and other technical needs for their school. In addition to gaining technical knowledge and expertise, the students also build up their confidence.

MOUSE heavies and board members Joanne Wilson, who's unfailing support for the organization was recognized; founder Andrew Raisej; Runtime Technologies president and CEO Bob Matsuoka and Crest Communications Holdings general counsel Matt O'Connell were schmoozing in their clique. I chatted with Dawn Barber and Tom Watson for a bit before Creative Good president Mark Hurst and I met up with consultant Greg Elin.

Attorney Steve Masur, Starvest Partners' Rachel Masters, City of Yokohama NYC representative Justin Zimmerman and JKS Events owners Janeen Saltman and Alden Levy were all enjoying the evening and catching up with friends they hadn't seen in a while.

Pepper Evans and Catherine Winchester were looking most elegant as they chatted with Bonnie Halper. Deloitte and Touche's Ellen Auwarter and NYNMA's Alice O'Rourke also cut a fine figure as they sampled some crudite. Poet Sarah Bedell and her friend Robin Glasser lingered as the raffle prizes were being called out.

The comraderie and interest from everyone there kept the majority of the guests till the bitter end, and then quite a few went upstairs to the Rise bar where views of the Hudson and Manhattan drinks could be had. To honor the students that make the programs at MOUSE work, was an especially nice gesture this year.

GameLab One-Year Anniversary Party ~ by Danielle Cyr

I recently attended Gamelab's (www.gmlb.com) one-year anniversary party at the Gamelab offices on Broadway. Our hosts and the co-founders of Gamelab, the irrepressible Eric Zimmerman and charming Peter Lee, held court with the diverse game crowd of oldsters and newcomers. Many countries were represented at the party. I first happened upon Andy Dong who was born in New York City but who is running his own game company in China. His company, Sosgrp, is working on Playstation 3 games and doing quite well, he said. Andy and I then met up with Ann-Marie Huurre of Women Wise (www.womenwise.com) who had flown in from her home town of Toronto to moderate the game panel the previous evening, and Jonas Nilsson, a native of Sweden and founder of his own game company, Cointeractive (www.cointeractive.com). All three were extremely knowledgable about the videogame industry in general, and the NYC industry in particular. It was a pleasure hearing their points of view on where the industry is headed and how business is going these days. I then bumped into Matthew Schlanger, President of Black Hammer Productions (www.blackhammer.com) over the hors d'oeuvres table where he proceeded to ask me a legal question several times which I could not hear over the loud music (I gave up). His colleague, Nikita Mikros joined us for a few minutes as did Angela Taormino of Prefer Network (www.prefernetwork.com). We wandered to the other end of the long, narrow office, whose walls were lined with about a hundred old board games from Eric Zimmerman's extensive personal collection (anyone for a game of "The Jetsons" or "The Incredible Hulk"?) and met up with Joe Plotkin of Bwy.net and John Rabasa, Director, Product Marketing for AOL. I played famous 80s videogame, Asteroids, with the help of Matt Sapero (he got in the Top Ten Higher Scorers three times; even with Matt's help working the "thruster" - no jokes, please - I, however, did not come anywhere near the Top Ten). Matt said that he is trying to raise money for a game idea along with working in business development for Larry Gardner of Cyberexruder (www.cyberextruder.com). I also spoke with Barbara Anglisz, who works with Gotham Games, an offshoot of Rockstar Games, and producer of the game panel the evening prior, as she promoted Gotham's first game, and Brian Loube, Interactive Executive Producer at Imaginary Forces (www.imaginaryforces.com). I said my thanks and goodbyes to my hosts and went off into the beautiful Fall evening.

Ryze Event at Remote Lounge ~ by Danielle Cyr

Upon arriving at Remote Lounge on the Bowery for the recent Ryze.org networking event, I greeted Andrew Kraft, the head of the New York Tribe, paid my $5, got a name tag and descended into the depths of the basement bar to spend the next 2 hours mingling and schmoozing. For the most part it was a group of people I did not know. Many old networking buddies had been signing my Ryze guestbook in the week leading up to the event and popping out of the woodwork to add me as a "friend" on their personal page. I expected to see many of these old friends at the event and was slightly disappointed when I did not. I then remembered that I was here to make new contacts and not to mingle with old friends (although a little of both is always enjoyable!).
Ryze is an online business networking tool which actually makes sense. You wonder why nobody thought of a website like this 3-5 years ago. Everyone who signs up is asked what they "have" and what they can "give". There are also inquiries about your industry, your interests, your hometown, and you can upload photos onto your page. Everyone has a virtual guestbook where other people can write you short, public messages. If you want, you can also send a private message but it's been my experience that many people use the public method of communicating at first to reconnect. It's also quite easy to add people as a "friend" or "contact" (although I haven't figured out the difference ramification for adding people as one or the other on this site).
The first person I ran into at the bar was Jason DeLuca, cousin of bad-boy, Michael DeLuca of New Line Cinemas. Jason and I discussed his work with Rockstar Games, and my former employment at a company in the videogame industry. I next introduced myself to sales executive, Michael Spitz, and connected with PR lady, Dara Tyson. I bumped into David Nadel whom I had met at this summer's FAN networking event and asked him to make me some marketing tchotckes for the holiday season. I introduced myself to Vineet "Vinnie" Joshi who promotes graduate school parties at hip clubs around town. I thought I recognized Rebecca Pridmore with her beautiful, long red hair, but she and I could not figure if we had, indeed, met before and, if so, where. Jen Leibhart was sitting with David Flores in front of the cameras which are all over the Remote Lounge, videotaping and broadcasting all the "goings-on" in the club (and sometimes posting photos on their website of same so be careful!). Jen pointed to an on-camera couple who were incorporating their own version of dirty dancing against the bar for the benefit of the cameras (and the rest of the bar patrons). David and I discussed his work at the Wall Street Journal Online and the pros and cons of moderated chat rooms on that site. Sitting across from us was a father-daughter networking duo, Amos and Elizabeth Sattelee. Elizabeth was a new college grad and dad was trying to instill in her the importance of networking. (Smart!) I introduced myself to sportswriter, Michael Griffin and then made my way back to the bar to speak with Matt Sapero and Chung Ng. The smoke overtook me and I ventured out into the night and took a cab to Rise at the Ritz-Carlton, Battery Park City to breathe the fresh harbor night air from the 14th floor bar balcony bar.

New Yorkers Find Love ~ by Tery Spataro

Relationships seem to be the topic of conversation these days. In the past we all took the cliche "it's not personal, it's only business" very seriously. Business performance became the priority over personal life. Well now there is resurgence in meaningful and long lasting relationships.
This past year we seem to rekindle matters of the heart. I for one have spent time on the dating scene trying to find Mr. Right...in my case that will be Mr. Imperfection. I've been open to trying everything from online dating forums like Match.com to Matchmaker.com, to friends setting me up with blind dates, to chance moments in the Amish Market, to even riding the first car of the subway. I even put together a list of special eligible bachelors that I have been considering. Though I've never been in a rush to be in a relationship I do find the process to be both delightful and frustrating.
During my course I discovered one of our favorite elder statesmen, Gary Welz exploring the subject of dating. I decided to attend one of his Personal Relationship Management Events. Gary's been an old friend from the Silicon Alley early days and has transformed from Internet expert to a new passion: Interactive Performance Artist and Relationship Connoisseur. In his PRS Events Gary highlights the trials and tribulations of dating through a series of PowerPoint presentations and audience participation. It's so much fun with a willing and diverse audience filled with both Venus and Mars explore mating rituals. Gary delights us with his dating antidotes while educates on matters of the heart from various perspectives. See and experience one of Gary's performances (http://www.prm4u.com), which just might improve your love life.

"My spam has changed lately. I'm getting less porn and more weight loss spam," both ABC News producer Nick Boris and Crossover Technologies president Eric Goldberg and I were commenting on this shift in email marketing at Tery Spataro's Feast for Friends on Friday, October 11, 2002. I began going through my head thinking of the various weight loss schemes I'd seen come into my Inbox. While I'd linger a bit on the porn emails out of curiosity (KIDDING!), I would quickly delete the "Cheap Viagra" and "Lose Weight Now" emails.
I decided to turn my attentions from one four-letter word (porn) to another (diet). I would look at each offer. My original thinking was to try all of them and report on the results to you, dear readers. Yes, I was going to sacrifice my metabolism just for you, so you could benefit and go forward safely into a new diet without risking your heart, metabolic rollercoaster or any other insane craving that might result.

Okay. That's it for now. Let me know what you think is the best program. Any favorites? If not, I'll do a bit more research and let you know.
Ahem, one final comment. Though I know a few of you might be thinking, "you don't have 30 pounds to lose!" You know--it's those last 5lbs that are the hardest! So I'll try one of these to get rid of those "last five." And I can track how "quickly they melt away!"
Till next time...

Behind the Scene at the International EMMAs

~ by Tery Spataro , Consultant, Mind Arrays

It was my first visit ever to the clean city of Toronto. I am thrilled to be heading there for my second year of judging the EMMAs. John Rodgers, Chief Executive of the EMMA Foundation, said "This year was an exciting time for the EMMAs. It is the first time that the judging event has taken place outside of Europe and we have been fortunate to have the support and assistance in Toronto from IMAT in helping to ensure that this was a wonderful experience for all involved."

I arrived early Wednesday, October 17, to make the Master Classes organized by Tom Green, Multimedia Program Coordinator for Humber College in Canada, who filled the audience with eager young college students wanting the learn latest from the industry pundits and specialists. The sessions were truly interactive and very informative.

October 18 began our judging. There were many old friends to greet and may new ones to meet. The EMMA judges are a seasoned enthusiastic group of international professionals from the Internet and interactive industries. We take very seriously the judging that we do and we give comments back to each and every entry submitted regardless of winning. This year brought some very impressive submissions. You can see the list of nominations at http://www.emma-foundation.org. In November the winners will be announced. "The quality of the submissions exceeded expectations yet again and whilst this caused the jury excessive deliberation, decisions were reached, and we are now delighted to be able to announce the finalists for this year's EMMAs", said John Rogers.

As we take our decisions and judging very serious we also take our time to get to know one another equally seriously. I for one always enjoy learning what's new from a business perspective from the industry. It was very interesting to be in Canada, our little brother to the north, to see how they have grown and what technologies seem to be widely used. Europe and the UK are still ahead of the game with wireless as a development platform. I long for the day when the US will catch up in this front. Aside from technology comparisons we also explored a wide variety of Cosmopolitan recipes. We concurred that Cosmos will be the official drink of choice among the EMMA judges.

Having some free time after judging I did part take in my favorite pass time...shopping! And I dragged along Alexandra Fiedler, from Germany and of DAB bank AG. We had a lovely time exploring the Eaton Mall. Yes, I actually went to a mall. There I discovered how far the American dollar would go in Canada. Later, that night the EMMAs enjoyed a wonderful dinner atop the CN Tower over looking the beautiful city of Toronto. We learned that Fawzia Pirbhai, Head of New Media for Decca Music Group and Madam Chair of EMMAs passed the Chairman baton to Ailsa Barry, whose impressive background with Microsoft to the BBC will only enhance to foundation. The International EMMAs (Electronic Multimedia Awards) recognize excellence in digital media content creation through the acknowledgement of best practice and ongoing educational programs.

Celebrating their 11th anniversary this year, this European based international award program attracts entries from over 40 countries and has the widest reach of any digital awards event worldwide.

The EMMAs are respected for their independence and impartiality and are widely recognized as the most prestigious interactive media awards. The EMMAs are organized in conjunction with an international steering committee comprising experts from all sectors of the industry and the sole objective of the competition is to reward excellence. In line with this policy, a single award is presented in each category, but only where the high standards that have become synonymous with the EMMA name have been achieved.

The EMMA Foundation is a not for profit company which encourages the creative, technical and professional development of digital media on a worldwide basis. Designed to support individuals and organizations who think and act globally, the Foundation provides an environment for developing networks, sharing knowledge and creating partnerships across all branches of the industry. The Foundation also manages the International EMMAs, which recognize excellence in all forms of digital media through the acknowledgement of best practice.

2003 EMMAs are almost upon us so do consider entering this prestigious competition! http://www.emma-foundation.org

Cocktails with Courtney ~ October

Rain, rain, go away! But you can't keep my friends away! The October Cocktails with Courtney event on Wednesday, October 16th was a cozy collection of old and new friends. Coincidentally, because Flute (on 20th Street) has a habit of other planning events in the same space as my event, we were mixed in with members of the MITP (Minorities in Technology Programming). This wasn't necessarily a bad thing, although it can be a bit annoying as a party planner. Nonetheless, we saw the likes of people like Nu-net CEO Dietmar Petutsching, Private Label InterActive president Lydia Sugarman, Silberware's Mark Silber, Wall Street Journal writer James Taranto, Jan Bergthun, Mary Dawne Arden and Karthik Swaminathan.

RR Whiz Kids--Combined Forces' Loren Pomerantz, LandersMadden's Machie Anne Madden, Schwartz PR's Steven Wright-Mark and Sloan & Company's Rob Argento--were out in full force. I also met some new lovelies like Janica--a TV star in Japan, who came round via our mutual Parisian friend Stock On Web Managing Director Victor Le Broussois.

One of the joys of hosting these events is that, like any good party, you get to see your old friends, but you also get to meet new ones as well. This night I got to meet Networking for Professionals president Amanda Nissman, CS Technology managing director Eileen Harris and CRC sales executive Scott Goldberg, Ellen Silverman, Adweek's Karen Sharkey and Brian Helfrich.
SiliconAlley.net's Bob Ponce introduced me to MITP event organizer Tanja Omeze (omeze.com). Attorney Danielle Cyr brought along Jen Grant and Bloom Flowers's Serena Walker brought along a few pals. Special thanks to Stuart Mark Gross and his BroadwayPix.com for photographing the soiree for us. You can see the pics at: www.broadwaypix.com and enter password: 1003
Come by our next event and meet all these fine folks too!
