Nino's Celebrates

Rescue efforts at Ground Zero are in full-efficiency mode now. Excavation is nearly complete and the little restaurant that became famous for feeding all the rescue workers, Ninos, has closed its doors. But Ninos didn't go away entirely. The Mom and Pop Italian restaurant served the volunteers, supporters and heros on Wednesday, April 17th at the trendy Tribeca Obeca Li restaurant.

Delicious samplings or food from restaurants like Roy's, Beacon, Tavern on the Green and Pastryarts.com kept guests satiated with salmon, shrimp, chicken and desserts. Ston and Windsor Vineyards offered vodka drinks. Downstairs guests in American-flag bandanas and t-shirts danced to a live band and kept cool with more refreshing beverages. Others bought silent auction tickets to win any number of great gifts.

The evening celebrated the accomplishments of those who served and honored our heroes All proceeds were used to pay the Fund's outstanding bills and to maintain current operations.

Nunet's 5th Anniversary

While the big news in New York has been about the record-heat, there have been some cool parties. You may feel that the quietness in the Alley is an indication that there isnít much going on. But, au contraire! Just this Wednesday, April 17th interactive shop nunet held a fabulous soiree in their swanky new offices. The cause de celebre? A new office space in New York, a new office in Los Angeles and being in business for five years! The white walls and space were cook and refreshing, perked up by lime green accents. This shop, famous for their work with Fashion Week (and all the digital photography for it), had photography equipment lining the walls in the back room and sleek Appleís and employeeís quirky touches on the desks.
CEO Dietmar Petutschnig greeted guests with wide open arms and introduced me to HSBC insurance sales officer Arthur Nathan. Arnell Groupís Monte Bartlett introduced me to tech-wiz Jim English, who was in some spiffy shoes! We chatted and caught up on whereabouts of mutual friends. Later, more salt-of-the-earth Silicon Alley-ites, like attorney Steve Masur, showed up. The evening was a perfect celebration of good people and a good company with a positive energy focused on the future. Pictures are at http://www.nunet.tv/pictures/party2002/

Talent, Energy and Emotion: Kate Dillingham Debuts

When you witness raw talent, that's been refined, it's an inspiration beyond words at times. Tuesday, April 16th, cellist Kate Dillingham moved the audience at Merkin Hall with her performance that evening. Accompanied by noted pianist Blair McMillen (http://www.blairmcmillen.com/) they brought us on an emotional journey with the following pieces: Sonata No.2 in D BWV 1028, J. S. Bach; "Chant" for cello and piano, Augusta Read Thomas; Five Pieces in Folk Style op.102, Robert Schumann; Sonate, Claude Debussy; Suite for Solo Cello, Jennifer Higdon and Suite Espanole, Joaquin Nin. Her world premiere pieces, both by women composers, were especially dramatic in these modern times.

Afterwards, guests enjoyed Bombay drinks-prepared by "celebrity" bartenders including myself, attorney Brad Simon and Janine Trusello--and hors d'oeuvres. Even some tech-folks came out for the night of culture, like Bob Wyman, Julio Cassels and VSA consultant Laine Harris. While the room was hot (Merkin hadn't turned on their air conditioning yet) the celebratory mood kept people's spirits high. And with a successful debut like this one in New York added to her already impressive resume, Kate is on her way to grander performances in the future.

Days of competition and glory

It's tough out there in business and protecting yourself and your property (intellectual and otherwise) is more important than ever. Addressing the need to know about such issues, NYSIA's Human Resources and Employment Special Interest Group offered a meeting at knoa Corporation on Tuesday, April 16 in the morning to discuss "Using Non-Compete and Confidentiality Agreements in the Workplace." SIG Leader, Jackson Lewis Schnitzler & Krupman attorney Penny Ann Lieberman kicked off the morning with a brief introduction and then guests heard from Stamford, CT Jackson Lewis' attorney Conrad Shawn Kee and CPA2Biz, Inc. attorney Lisa Frank. More information from this SIG can be gotten from: www.nysia.org

Come to Schneider's!

There's nothing like a cold beer at the end of a hot day to wash down the days wins or woes. And StartAbroad.com started up their "First Beer Free" Party again on Tuesday, April 16 at the delightful Bavarian indoor Biergarten Zum Schneider. A respectable, rowdy, randy and rambunctious crowd gathered to sip and sup. Check it all out at: http://www.ZumSchneider.com for more info and photos!

TV Makes the City Party Scene Go 'Round

Thursday night, April 11th was to hold surprises all night of a TV-theme on the temperate spring night. Starting off in the trendy Meat-packing district TV-freelance reporter and anchor Nonnie Gerber and I enjoyed champagne and great conversations with Japan TV's Kenzo Hashimoto at Pastis for the TV5 launch in New York City. (www.tv5.org) This French-language programming channel was introduced, in French, as the champagne, red and white wines flowed. Also endless were the platters of oysters and shrimp. Hors d'oeuvres of cod fritters and asparagus-wrapped carpaccio were being passed like there was no tomorrow and then waiters came out one after another with so many plates of salmon, roast beef and chicken you could've fed a large family in Nebraska!

Nonnie and I were joined by Chris Lukas and Dan Berg. Together, with Ian Shapolsky we went up the street to a Princess Grace fundraiser on 14th Street. After more champagne we hopped in Nonnie's Porsche for a quick trip uptown to Henri Bendel's where we brushed passed (and gave a nod of greeting) to "Sex & The City" star Kim Cattrall and fashion-designer Patricia Field. I almost got knocked over by a few drag queens and one woman's afro was so high (about a foot!) that it too nearly knocked me over as she turned around quickly. Our hearts beat deeply as we passed the booming heavy bass pumping out of the speakers. We decided we'd had enough of the loud-craziness and wove our way out... back into the cooling night and calm NYC streets!

Way Down West You Will Find The East ~ by Janine Trusello

If you swing over to the Lower, Lower West Side (that would be the southern-most slices of Tribeca or the layer floating on top of the Downtown area, depending on how you look at it) and travel west across Chambers Street, over to Greenwich (with a pit stop at the delicious Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory of course) and then scoot north for a few steps, you will land between Duane and Reade streets. At this point you will need to look on the eastern side of the street for the number 317 and a very nice looking sign hanging up outside that says "Salaam Bombay." Put your hand on the door handle and go inside. You will then follow these exact same steps many, many times afterwards as long as you continue to live in or visit this fine city.

This very relaxing restaurant was the most recent location for a Dining to Make a Difference gathering, a series of food and drink focused events that have been held since October to help revitalize the economy, build community, and aid relief efforts. These supportive and entertaining events, now sixteen-plus and counting, are the creation of Vergant Media's founder and president, Wendy Dubit, who states, "These events are designed to get people to realize that they can make a difference by dining out soon and often, bringing colleagues and friends, booking parties, attending benefits, volunteering, and contributing to their community on a daily basis."

The evening started in the downstairs party hall with tasty cocktails and complimentary appetizers (also tasty) such as papadams, naans, vegetable pakoras and chicken wing based kalmi kababs, all enhanced by chutney-to-die-for. Who CARES if anything is deep fried! Early birds, other than myself and Wendy, included Knowledge for Professionals president, Paula Garzon who I had just seen the previous evening at the Canadian Consulate for an event, and Personal Relationship Management Services founder and CEO, Gary Welz, both people being Dining to Make a Difference regulars. Many others soon followed and along with the sounds of upbeat Indian music, a great evening was underway.

The second wave of Dining to Make a Difference regulars (and volunteers) included The Hamptons International Film Festival board member, Kim Brizzolara, and tireless WTC site rescue worker Scott Shields and his famous, tireless WTC site rescue dog extrordinaire, Bear Shields. Also on hand to enjoy the endless plates of delicious food was X-Change Technologies V.P., Susan Lapczynski, attorney Rebecca Garza, and Benchmark BeHome director, Emily Davidow.

After a few hours of knoshing and cocktailing, guests could opt to stay for a full dinner in the upstairs dining room. Before relocating the party, I talked with express.com vice president, Alison Johns, RandomPlace.com founder, Geo Geller (a long-time Wendy Dubit fan), and cool accessory designer, Lisamarie Dixon who was there with her mom, Necla Refes and her Godfather, Richard Paley. Also in attendance was Mila Gorokovich, a Ukrainian high school student who had spoken at the World Economic Forum on behalf of netaid.org.

Those who chose to continue inhaling the amazing food headed upstairs to the dining room. Amongst the diners were John Marlin, Peter Muller & Associates attorney Peter Muller, Delta Markets Group managing director Peter Burton, and New York City Fire Department software developer, Kevin Jones, another Dining to Make a Difference regular.

For those of you interested in attending these wonderful events visit www.vergant.com and get yourself on the mailing list. Once there, you will also be able to get all the information you need on the upcoming, very fantastic, not-to-be-missed, month-long May June Dining to Make a Difference Fest and scavenger hunt that will encourage participants to patronize as many venues as possible during that period and beyond.

Plans are now being finalized for this event which will kick-off on Wednesday May 15th, so hurry and get on the list for info. and updates!

The 18-year old problem-child in Albany

The 18-year old problem-child in Albany
Many parents figure when their children go to college, they won't have to deal with as many problems with them since they're not at home. But what if you have an 18-year old that's got a problem and hasn't any indications of going away the following year?
Well, good parents sit down with their child, talk with him and try and work out the problem and find a solution. Bad parents ignore the child or just send them away anyway.

What do you do, though, when the 18-year old isn't really a child but an issue and the parents aren't really parents but are elected officials. Well, that's exactly the case with the New York State budget, which has never been passed on time for 18 years. What's wrong with our legislators that they can't address this and be responsible to our State, schools, non-profits and other constituencies that rely on state-support and funding?

I was privy to hear a range of reasons on Tuesday, April 9th, when I accompanied the Advocates for Public Policy committee with the New York Junior League to Albany, NY. Our mission was to meet with various representatives and address three bills that were important to us and our community partners. The New York Junior League works with 26 Community Partners-other non-profits that provide social services in New York City. We focus on four areas: family life skills, healthy foundations (for children, young mothers and families), cultural enrichment of youth (arts programs) and domestic violence (legal support, support with police stations, preventative and ongoing support).

The three bills the committee focused on and researched for this year were: "an on-time budget," "CPR training in secondary schools," and "broadening the definition of Family for Court access." The CPR bill was supported and financed by the American Red Cross and American Heart Association and would require CPR training to students in secondary schools. With the baby boomer generation aging and with more and more Americans becoming obese, this knowledge will become more and more important. For many years there have been various efforts to broaden the definition of family for domestic violence purposes so non-spouse live-in partners would have rights in family court as opposed to having to work through the harder criminal court guidelines in domestic abuse situations.

The larger, more unwieldy bill that was met with the most resistance was the proposal of passing a budget on time. One aide to Senator Assemblyman Herman Farrell Jr. (chairman of the Ways and Means) just replied, "I'm a jaded staffer" when queried as to when this might pass. He agreed the government should pass a budget on-time but when questioned if he thought passing any budget on-time or accepting the governor's proposed budget would be a bad idea he agreed. The issue became more complex. Many bills get passed very quickly at the end of the year because nothing can be passed until the budget is set. So many legislators leave bills for the last minute, so the voting is rushed and then will get through more quickly. (This way there's less time to debate.)

However, holding up passage of a new budget delays funding that can go to non-profits and schools that are reliant on these monies for their operation and existence. Especially in tougher economic times, when these organizations can rely less on corporate donations, funding from the state becomes vital. Without it, staff layoffs and elimination of programs begin to occur.

It also seemed as if Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was the big bottleneck. There are bills related to passing the budget on time in both houses, but they never make it past Silver. The only hopeful meeting we encountered was with Michael Avella, first assistant counsel to the Majority New York State Senate, who suggested if the Assembly could pass a bill, and they have one that makes it through the Senate, then it could go to a Conference.

In any case, the day was a success in terms of a great learning experience. And I have to admit, based on the enthusiasm of the other women I traveled with, and their diligent work and follow-up skills, Wednesday, April 9th will not be the last they hear of us!

Publisher's Note ~ Disturbing News

Aside from the disturbing stories about the ongoing battles in other parts of our world, there were two other news items that were of significant interest to me.

First, we're all getting ruder. That's right. Americans are getting meaner, nastier and more socially unacceptable by the minute. Public Agenda, a New York-based nonprofit organization, conducted a poll with 2,013 adults that found 79% of them felt rudeness in America was a serious problem. I would agree. Among the most offensive are customer service situations and call centers, people on their cell phones talking loudly and reckless driving. While not many solutions were offered by the survey subjects, we'd all do well by just remembering the Golden Rule we learned in Kindergarten (or I hope you learned) -- and we might be able to do away with some of this anti-social behavior. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." And for more pearls of wisdom, feel free to check out our Social Notes archive at: http://www.thecyberscene.com/socialnotes/index.html

For more information: http://www.publicagenda.org/
http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/04/02/rude.americans/index.html

The other piece of upsetting news was that we're still not getting enough sleep, which is one of the things that is making us more irritable (see above). According to this poll, conducted by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), people who slept less than six hours a night felt more stressed, angry, sad and tired than people who got more sleep. A major reason for this is our overly-busy lives, multi-tasking lives in the new, new economy. So while it may not be as exciting to party it up 'til the wee hours, or feel as if we're being as productive by not working 14-hour days and then having a killer game of squash before heading home to work on our new novel, you might be doing yourself a favor by heading off to the slumber-chamber earlier and catching a few more Zzzzzz's.

Independent films 'r in da house

The camera zoomed in for a close-up. It focused on a tight-fitting Lycra top on a well-endowed woman just as she began adjusting herself and smoothing out the front. A bit down the way, another camera scanned quickly and then stopped on another chesty lass and then moved down to the derriere for inspection.

No, contrary to what you may think, I hadn't decided to stop into a XXX shop for amusement, but the lads at the 5th Annual Brooklyn International Film Festival kick-off party at the Remote Lounge on Wednesday, April 3rd were certainly taking advantage of the voyeuristic aspects of this trendy bar.

Among one of the more decent fellows whom I chatted with was Small Wood & Stuart production editor Sam Miller. He introduced me to his friend, writer and producer Serena McDonald, whose film "The Gentle Cycle" was being shown in the festival. Serena then introduced me to her director, 6-time Emmy award winner Peter Nolan. KPF.com architects Gabriel Conzalaz and Gatan Michaux were enjoying the evening with their friend Ole Hansen, who works on reproductive health issues for women in Africa and Latin America. Nectarios Leonidas was also among the classier gentlemen and explained how he's just finished his film but also just missed the deadline for this festival and the South by Southwest film festival that was in March. You can learn more about his film, though, by going to flippant.net.

Anya Pechko brushed past me, shoving me out of her way, so she could go chat with one of her friends. She might want to reference the recent articles on rudeness mentioned above. I introduced myself to her and met Seth Carmichael, who is a film producer. The festival's artsy scene was drawing in the eclectic crowd and the free beers from Stella Artois were keeping them satiated-that and all the voyeurism that was going on!

AIMing to make sense

In uncertain times there's something to be said for consistency. And the Association for Interactive Marketing (AIM) has a stronghold on its events by hosting them at the elegant Metronome restaurant on Broadway. Their latest Dinner and A Deal, sponsored by Doubleclick on Wednesday, April 3rd, brought together interactive marketers old and new. Moderated by the eloquent Larry Chase, publisher of Web Digest for Marketers, attendees listened to the "Internet Face-off: Direct Marketing vs. Branding" viewpoints from Futurebrand Worldwide Media & Entertainment global executive director Alan Schulman, RappDigital founder and vice chairman J.G. Sandom and Doubleclick VP of Marketer Sales Andy Ellenthal.

The lively debate was punctuated by questions from the audience. Radio personality Sam Albert (1010 WINS) commented that his 8-year old grandson Cameron isn't concerned about privacy-he knows his daddy will watch out for his privacy concerns and that if anyone online asks for information from him, he's to check it out with his father first. (Wouldn't the world be a better place if every child had a father like Cameron's?) Sam introduced me to AGI media packaging director Jason Block and nearby Larry Chase and Matt Letterman introduced me to Boston-based FreshAddress.com president Austin Bliss. Now for all those people struggling to maintain your mailing lists, give Austin a shout-they clean up faulty emails.

FutureBrand executive director Alan Schulman, Invision president Jeff Shachtman and Eppend president Tom Burke were enjoying the evening camaraderie after the panel. I enjoyed a lovely salmon dinner with Sunstar e-business division GM Adrian Dessi, who told us about his tenure at Avon.com and how he helped start and run the interactive division. ModemMedia's chairman G.M. O'Connell entertained us for a while recounting his discussion with panelist Jay Sandom. Much of the panel centered on privacy, email, metrics and branding. GM's point was that while the Internet has had a profound impact on the Internet as a branding medium, we should not overlook the importance of the consumer relationship aspects. Jay concurred!

Yes, branding is a vital part of competing successfully in business these days. And the Internet and advertising on this medium is one effective venue for this. But as we've also been made aware of, the best branding in the world doesn't matter if people don't buy the product or service. More AIM dinners will surely address similar topics, to be sure, so stay tuned for their next one in a few months!

Biometrics take center stage

Retinal and fingerprint scans may seems like figments of science fiction or movies like Blade Runner, but they are truly coming to an office or airport near you. The Swedish Consul General hosted a panel discussion and reception on Wednesday, April 3rd in his Manhattan residence to scan some of the real-world examples and real-life impacts of this emerging realm of technology, which is called biometrics.
Guests heard the Biometric Foundation's executive director, M. Paul Collier, moderate as representatives from Precise Biometrics, the Pinkerton Agency, Securitas Group, Visionics and the Walden Agency discussed new products and innovations. Consul General Olle Wastberg commented on some of the technology we're using today - viz., airlines embracing smart cards and fingerprints to screen passengers.

I spoke at length with Visionics chairman and CEO Joseph Atick, who explained that his involvement in the biometrics industry began before it even really was an industry. Starting out with just a handful of techies in the '80s in a national research center, he was one of the first people to discover human patterns (face, skin, etc.) could be incorporated into new types of security systems. Their first challenge was presented by the United States Post Office. The USPS wanted to see if this band of biometric-ites could develop a system that could read handwritten zip codes on mail pieces. While they developed a solution, the USPS never adopted it because it was impossible to get Americans to write the zip codes numbers in specially designed boxes (remember those five little rectangles at the bottom of the address sections of post cards?). The Japanese government, however, was able to win its population over to this new method, and the system is ubiquitous in that country.

Undeterred, Atick formed Visionics in 1994 with his own funding to develop human-pattern recognition for fingers and faces. The first round of outside financing in 1998 was for $3.6 million from an angel investor -- and since then, they've emphasized revenue generation. (Hey, how about that?!) In a reverse merger last February with a public company (Digital Biometrics--a hardware firm that made sensors that captured fingerprints), Atick changed the management structure. Today, Visionics is the largest pure-play in the biometrics space. While using different technology, each one is focused on delivering a solution that associates action with identity (access control, surveillance, security). Their big clients, as you can well imagine are governments and law-enforcement departments.

Among their bigger projects are security solutions for the Mexican elections (face scans so voters can't vote a second time, which cuts down on fraud) and West Virginia and Colorado states (to stop people from getting multiple drivers licenses). Of course, one technology they'd developed--fingerprinting in airports to ensure employees don't have criminal records-has become mandated after 9/11.

Going forward, Visionics will be targeting regulated industries like transportation, banking and healthcare for information security. By the end of June, their merger with Identics should be completed and they will be able to expand upon the commercial fingerprint technology with government channels.

Also in the fingerprinting business is Precise Biometrics. But while Biometrics stays in the finger and face scanning arena, Precise Biometrics also is developing smart cards as well. This five-year old company was formed in the Science Park in Sweden's south. This is where Ericsson started its wireless revolution and the key founders of Precise Biometrics are from Ericsson, which explains the company's stronghold in smart cards. Smart cards are used in all GSM phones, which are a standard in Europe. Precise Biometrics uses smart cards in comparing between finger and face scans and in many information technology applications like signing and encrypting email, logging into computers and gaining access to offices with physical boxes outside offices that scan a finger for its print.

Precise Biometrics CEO & president Christer Bergman told me that while the firm is just 65 people strong, they went public one and a half years ago on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, and frequently work with much larger firms. In their door access projects they've teamed up with Honeywell and Securitas. From the information technology and logical access issues, they collaborate with ActiveCard and Siemens. They've even got a few inroads to Sun Microsystems after Scott McNealy demoed their product a few months ago.

Having been in the IT business for 20 years, Bergman explained that they're focusing on areas like m-commerce and the 3G networks. His goal is to have their biometric engine smart cards for this new generation of handhelds (phones, PDAs). He cited American Express' Blue card as a good tease with promises of what may come in the future. He also sees m-commerce as the Internet itself, where one day there will be a need to know who is contacting your device at the other end for security and identity purposes. One group within his firm is developing mobile security and smart ID cards for this. As they continue to develop, they are expanding from their two offices in Sweden to the United States.

Bergman first came to Precise Biometrics five years ago, primarily helping the company with sales and marketing. But his involvement and track record prompted the board nine months ago to see if he could help run the company in Sweden as well. Bergman realizes that many people cite 50% - 70% growth in this market every year. As a result, his goals are to grow the company at double that rate.

After the compelling conversation, guests mingled to enjoy wines and salmon-themed hors d'oeuvres. Biometric Foundation executive director Paul Collier and event sponsor Weatherly Securities Corp SVP Stephanie Phillips were chatting with Grant Thornton's Leslie Baker. Sparring Partners' Warren Spar spoke of his interest in biotechnology investments to Dynamar president Jan Mardh and Visionics' Frances Zelazny. XL Enterprise's Sidney Li told me, Pillsbury Winthrop attorney Ronald Fleming and MorganStanley VP Patrick Wall about his company. XL Enterprises helps Chinese technology companies raise funds and market themselves and helps foreign firms enter the Chinese market.

As with every business and investment panel and networking event, meeting new people is one of the primary objectives. As I left my own fingerprints on my wine glass, I couldn't help but think about all the faces and fingerprints that might soon be scanned by tiny cards and scanners in places we have yet to see. Like biotechnology and nanotechnology, biometrics is another field bursting with developments set on changing our world.

Lincoln Day Festivities

Most American's recognize February as a month with Lincoln and Washington's birthday. Some even get a day off for President's Day and we all know about all the car sales and department store sales that pop up in honor of our former presidents. After all, what's more American than shopping and buying a brand-spanking new car?!

Well, there is another "Lincoln Day" festivity, which was held on Wednesday, April 3rd at the Regent Wall Street in downtown New York City. The Lincoln Day Dinner was started, and chaired, by Senator Roy Goodman over 30 years ago. This New York Republican Committee Annual Dinner brought together republican representatives, and other politicos, from across the state to celebrate and welcome the new chair for the reception--Andrew Eristoff. Eristoff's goals are to revitalize the Republican party, bring in more young people and make it inclusive and hip!

And hip it was! At least the party was. In former years, it's been at the Sheraton, but Eristoff called upon the dynamic and beautiful Michelle Bouchard to organize the affair. Because she knew it was a great venue, and because she wanted to support downtown NYC, she chose the Regent Wall Street. They also reached their goal of getting younger generations there as well-many 25 and 35-year olds showed up to hear Governor Pataki and Mayor Bloomberg speak. Other speakers were Assemblyman John Ravitz, Assemblyman John Faso (who is also running for State Controller and who was Guiliani's former Commissioner of Finance. Councilmen Gallagher and Oddo, Senator Espeda (the controversial one-switching from Democratic to Republican) and NY State Republican Committee chairman Alexander Treadwell were there to "press-the-flesh." NY State Independence party chairman Cathy Stewart and NY State Conservative party chairman Dan Mahoney showed their support at the event as well as celebrity doctor Dr. Mehmet Oz, the heart surgeon and author ("Healing from the Heart").

Not only was there superlative schmoozing, but the band was heating things up considerably too. Republican District Leader Lolita Jackson and The Rummies helped make this hip party the first of what will be many more for the new Republicans!
