Publisher's Note ~ An Announcement

Over the past several weeks, some of you may have noticed a change in delivery of this publication. Some of you may have noticed a slower schedule of the Cocktails with Courtney events. Well, never fear, there¹s a good reason behind this seemingly-scattered activity. In fact, I really haven't been scattered at all. I've been quite focused. And what, you may ask, have I been focused on? Well, I've met a wonderful man who¹s captured my heart and whom I'll be marrying in August.

Yes, it's true. The "dot-com doyenee" (The New Yorker, 10/18/2000) and "Tribeca Contessa" (Red Herring, 2/2000) is engaged and has committed herself to one gent. As a result, over the next two months I will continue to be quite preoccupied with the most important event that I'll ever plan-our wedding and reception!

However, this isn't the last you'll have heard from me. I will, of course, continue The Cyber Scene and we still have a few events in June and July. And then, after I return from our honeymoon, I will be back in the saddle again, with some events in the fall.

Oh. In case you're curious as to who this 'mystery man' is, I¹ve created a webpage where you to see us in our blissful happiness! (http://www.pulitzer.com/wedding/052402pn.html)

Peace, and see you soon!

Stardust Circle & Cocktails ~ What to do with your IRA?!

The ever- eloquent Kathryn O'Hagan, investment consultant with Morgan Stanley, graced our presence on Thursday, May 23rd with her discussion on "What to do with your IRA," a particularly pertinent topic considering so many people have changed jobs, lost their job or gotten a new one. We had a great group of attendees including Cowen Financial's Richard Frazer, Jan Bergthun, Lance Bobrow and Chris Saccaro. Fred Liu and Kenzo Hashimoto mingled among the beautiful clothes at Dana Buchman while Carol Peteres and WSJ.com's James Taranto chatted and sampled some of the fine cheeses. Jeff Silverman, designer Antje Croton and TV producer/editor Dorothy Dunne sipped some of the chilled wine as Kathryn began her talk. Afterwards, questions from PR whiz Dan Hall and others kept the information (and conversation) flowing. The momentum from this soiree will continue as Kathryn and I schemed about new events for you!

The Cyber Scene in San Francisco ~ by Lorraine Sanders

The craigslist After Dark Party held on May 22, 2002 at San Francisco's DNA Lounge was indeed a physical manifestation of the craigslist community. Since its debut in 1995, craigslist has become a household name and valuable resource for Bay Area residents, small businesses, entrepreneurs, and local non-profit organizations. Just as the online community provides a forum for myriad organizations and individuals seeking exposure through non-traditional marketing and promotional initiatives, the craigslist party created a physical space for local arts and media non-profits to showcase their programs and answer questions. The diversity of craigslist users and participants was immediately apparent in the attendees. From partygoers cowboy hats to dot.com types to disco divas to granola-crunch environmentalists, the crowd represented a cross-section of the San Francisco community that only craigslist could assemble.

The event began at 7pm as much more of an exhibition than a club night. As the crowds steadily ambled into the newly renovated SoMa venue, the atmosphere and music became increasingly high-energy and festive. By the end of the evening, people were moving and dancing from the main floor on up the stairs to the back corners of the building. Event DJs were DJ Rueben (DestinoSF.com), Kevin (Bulletproof), and Toph 1 (redwine).

On the main floor, five local organizations spread flyers, pamphlets, and stickers on tables for the milling crowd to peruse. By just turning around in place, one could read-up on the effects of cannabis and ecstasy, purchase hemp wear, sign various petitions, enjoy a strong cocktail, and have an unobstructed view of the raised DJ platform. In attendance were representatives from the Bay Area Video Coalition, a noncommercial media arts center providing education and resources to the Bay Area community; Independent Art & Media, an organization supporting local artists with networking and production services; San Francisco Indymedia, the Bay Area branch of the global group dedicated to revealing truth through media outlets; Popular Noise Foundation, a collaborative supporting local music initiatives; and Share Project, a coalition dedicated to promoting safe rave and nightlife communities nationwide. In addition to these groups' materials, several local artists displayed their work along the lounge's walls.

A quick tour of the multi-level venue revealed rooms with music from house to popular, groovy tunes. Upstairs, attendees leaned lazily over the balcony railing, observing the crowd milling below. While some of them may have been waiting their turn at the popular chair massage station, the eclectic crowd below adorned in various funky incarnations of San Francisco style provided enough eye-catching entertainment to keep people stuck and staring. A back room upstairs provided a dark, somewhat suspicious looking chill-out area and comfortable seating.

The event, in its entirety, was a testament to the significant positive effect craigslist has had on the Bay Area community. In one venue, arts and media joined with technology to promote awareness and positive change through community action. The overwhelming turnout and show of support for participating organizations was an uplifting affirmation of a party's ability to carry a serious message. Thanks craigslist for a fabulous evening!

2002 Global Wireless Summit Wows

The 2002 Global Wireless Summit (http://consect.com/2002/indtf.html) was not only a hit, but was a world debut too! Monday, May 20, 2002 Consect.com and the Japan Society hosted 300 leading mobile, content and service industry executives for a great event that explored the latest real-world applications and advances in mobile technology. And, of course, there was plenty of networking to go around too.

I spoke with Consect co-founder and CEO Mark Frieser who gave me a full report about the day's events.

The day started with a keynote from Nobuharu Ono, the President and CEO of DoCoMo USA. Ono-san spoke about DoCoMo's strategic efforts and mission in the US and globally. He went into the technologies, applications, services and challenges in the US market. He also went into what they're doing with ATTWireless (of which they own 16%) on a practical level to develop infrastructure, devices and applications for mobile wireless.

Silicon Alley has always had a penchant for advertising-themed discussions and the next panel was on that exact subject. Underscore Marketing, LLC CEO Tim McHale moderated the discussion between panelists Hakuhodo Institute director of research Mariko Fujiwara, Vindigo Advertising and Sales VP Carrier Himelfarb, GoAmerica Inc. CFO Frank Elenio and Turner Broadcasting Sales Business Development VP Nick Johnson. They detailed the latest advances, campaigns and trends in mobile advertising from both Japanese and American perspectives and the methods you can use for wireless advertising.

The viability of putting financial and information services online on wireless devices was the subject to chew over for the next panel. The discussion between CNBC International Chairman and CEO Bill Bolster and Wall Street Journal Online publisher Neil Budde was compelling as they dolled out how stocks and news could be attained wirelessly. Meanwhile, US Wireless Data CEO and Chairman Dean Leavitt and Nikkei VP of Electronic Media Takashi Tanemura tossed witticisms back and forth regarding developments in their firms. Salans partner and chair of the Information Technologies and Communications Group Owen Kurtin moderated most deftly! - one of the key adult uses of the mobile applications.

The devices and infrastructure panel was a fun one. Attendees could here how different devices are developed, the design factors and design approach for them. Speakers were Ericsson NA Mobility Solutions VP Solomon Israel, Qualcomm Carrier Relations VP Bill Davidson, NEC America Bizdev and Product Planning director Scott Spreen and Samsung Product Management and Product Engineering VP Muzibul Khan. Consect's CEO and conference organizer Mark Frieser was the moderator for this insightful panel. They also covered how to develop for different markets. Khan, Israel and Spreen talked about approaches on developing, how-to develop and how you must react to the needs of the telecom companies to produce devices according to what they were told by network operators.

Lunching included a product showcase where attendees could play around with the latest phones from NTT DoCoMo, Samsung, Casio, Toshiba, Kyocera, NEC and with applications from companies like GameLoft.

New York is also well-known for its entertainment industries and The Deal senior writer Matt Miller moderated a compelling discussion between Virgin Mobile Director of Corporate Affairs Steven Day, Pressplay CTO Bill Pence, Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment Wireless Services VP Rio Caraeff and ESPN VP Rick Alessandri. So, is entertainment the killer app of 3G? Pense discussed different kinds of games, downloads and sports information you can get on mobile platforms. Caraeff talked about games available on their platform that they developed from films. You can also see what films are playing in your area, make purchases and download ringtones and characters. Day discussed sports information, ringtones and other services they have to make the user experience easier for the consumer. Guess what? They use the Internet for that! Alessandri told us about the sports applications they have created for mobile phones too.

And as if that wasn't enough, the day ended with a keynote from OQO president Colin Hunter, in which he also debuted his product for the first time on the East Coast. This modular computer company developed the first wireless modular PC - it runs Windows XP, is 9oz and can be a laptop, desktop or palmtop. OQO is a startup by three people who were instrumental at Transmetta and on the Titanium Powerbook and Thinkpad teams. The full color screen, Wi-Fi capable unit has Bluetooth and 80211B built into it is powered by 1gigahertz processor, has a battery life of 2 hours and a 10-20 gig hard-drive. You can expect to try this whiz-bang device by end of this year for a mere $1400.

All in all, it was a good turnout, about 275 people, all of whom enjoyed sake, beer and sushi for some solid networking. Future conferences are scheduled for San Diego and Tokyo in October and December, respectively, this year and for New York in May 2003. One of the big take-aways people got from this event, was the practical real-world-application information they couldn't get anywhere else.

Celebrating Women Entrepreneurs

The patio had ivy garlands running up the roof of the tent. Clear plastic panels revealed a blurry view of the West and the Hudson River and South down 7th Avenue. The Apartment at the Hudson Hotel on Wednesday, May 15th was buzzing with busy women entrepreneurs and investors at the Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison and Deloitte & Touche cocktail reception honoring women in the entrepreneurial and investment community. Brobeck's Lisa Tribel greeted me and introduced me to Brobeck's partner Ellen Corenswet, Deloitte & Touche's Sara Hawes and director of business development Barbara Horvath, director Rebecca Reilly and partner Janet Moran. Consultant Wendy Stahl and I chatted about upcoming events while other notable women like Springboard's Amy Milman and Pace Wildenstein Gallery's Andrea Schwartz mingled with friends. North Haven Partners' Adele Morrisette was breezing in to catch the scene and told me her firm just closed on three transactions and has more in the shoot! I had the opportunity to meet up with Kenna Tech's Barbara Handelin, Venrock's Stephanie Batchelor, Erica Lana, Grove Street LLC's Elaine Gilde, Trade Settelement's president/CEO Pat Loret de Mola and Transperfect Translations president & CEO Liz Elting.

The petite hors d'oeuvres and crisp white wine were refreshing in the slightly muggy Spring day; the sunset was delightful and the networking simply divine! Watch this space for more recaps of other fantastic event recaps like this one!

Mickey D's and Deal Making

Usually I avoid McDonald's at all costs. And even though there were promises of Veuve Cliquot champagne, it was still difficult to walk into the overly bright fluorescently lit plastic and formica joint. But I did. The occasion that brought me, and a hundred other Silicon Alley veterans, investors and newbies was Jason McCabe Calacanis's and the Venture Reporter magazine's celebration of its Venture Reporter 100 Party on Tuesday, May 14th at the McDonald's on 34th Street. It was also coined the "Back to Reality Party," and back to reality it was. I saw Alley notables like Connors Communications' Connie Connors and iVillage.com's women.com director Joelle Klein there along with new people like ValueLine.com's Ludmila Merka.

Mariner Pacific Ltd managing director Sanjay Pai and Starvest Partners' Rachel Masters were comparing notes on a few deals they were both looking at. West Coast-based Brad Nye was in town and told me about his new non-profit Amuse (beamuse.org) and I got to catch up with MSNBC's Lisa Napoli and Consect's Mark Frieser. Attorneys Steve Masur and Danielle Cyr chatted with friends upstairs, where I also saw WWWAC's Scott Bowling and Silicon Alley Station's president Bob Ponce and executive producer Dolly Neilson.

The beloved Bernardo appeared after a two-month hiatus in Europe. (He looked very tan and relaxed!) Inside, under the unfortunate glaring lights, I saw Gevity HR's Cynthia Aston, and Rhizome.org's Mark Tribe, who reported that his event from earlier that evening went fabulously! Henry Bar-Levav was looking quite rustic in a full beard and overalls and Katie Scheding, Plesser's Jason Chupick and Jen Mediano were snacking on some chicken fingers and sauce. Near the door were SkyForge Solutions's Andrew Weinrich and Scott Heiferman who were reminiscing about old times. Sonata's founder Owen Davis was intense in conversation while I heard about F*cked Company's party downtown from HipGuide's Syl Tang. Apparently, according to many eye-witnesses, it was a "geek of the week" fest, "Pud" was well on his merry way of blissful happiness and girls were fair game for the over-served "gentleman" geeks. Arnell Group's Monte Bartlett also reported on the F*cked affair, which made it easy for me to decide to get a Big Mac and fries and go home!

FANs of Networking

"Your recruiter isn't calling you back. What do you do?" That was the tagline for the FAN event (Free Agent Networking) on Tuesday, May 14th at the Metropolitan Café. Elyse Spalding of Spalding Associates enlightened the gathered guests on how they can work with media industry recruiters to land their next job--and ultimately advance their careers. When I arrived I was greeted by CommConnect LLC partner Jennifer Kronstain, who introduced me to FAN founder Matt Prohaska. Matt told me the scoop on how he started this networking event for people out of work. Recognizing that many jobs are found via networking, Matt wanted to "speed up the randomness" associated with it. He invites those looking for work and companies looking to hire. After three events in New York and one in San Francisco, they are on a roll. Matt's wife, Bronwyn Prohaska, is working fulltime for the organization and eight part-timers, including Beth Cohen and David Nadel, help ensure things work like clockwork. PR veterns David Murrow and Tim Paul were out hitting the parties this night. David told me his wife, Debra Lee and he just had a baby boy-Lukas David! Vicki Herschman, an administrative assistant in TV, film and media and Discovery Communications' operations administrator Pamala McCormick-Steward were also enthusiastic about the event and their red-paper gift bags complete with a mug and CD. With a plethora of job-networking events going on, check out the FAN one too. You never know where your next job will come from and it's good to have as many options as possible!

New York City Women in Technology Network ~ by Danielle Cyr, Esq.

New York City Women in Technology (NycWIT), a networking and support list-serve for women in the technology field (www.worldwit.org), had its first event on Tuesday night, May 14th. The scene of the event was at Fez and after I made initial introductions, the dynamic, intelligent women who were there enthusiastically threw themselves into networking with the other women who had come. I met Debora Berberian, principal consultant of Technium Consulting; Cindy Wenig, of Chadbourne & Parke (real estate for tech clients); Tracey Losco, Network Security Analyst for NYU; Debra Albert, SVP of Datamonitor; consultant Dayle Henschel; Suzanne Carlson, a technical architect and Kristin Peterson, principal of Velocity, among others. There were a handful of (smart) men who came as well. Old friends--Ed Bogen, Steve Masur and Marc Seago all seemed to be making business connections and enjoying themselves. Richard Frazer was discussing insurance with Karen Sarpolis. Karen, the founder of a health information technology company, was the person who came the furthest as she was visiting from Chicago and is a member of our sister list-serve, ChicWIT. Judging by the number of business cards exchanged, the smiles and the effusive "goodbyes", I'd say that NycWIT's first event was a resounding success! NycWIT's next event will be in June. Hope to see you there!

The Cyber Scene in Boulder ~ by Tamar Alexia Fleishman

Celebrity interview of KIM BRUCKNER, champion cyclist with degree in international economics

31 year old Kim Bruckner lives in the mountains of Boulder and has the world at her feet. The daughter of "super athletic" parents who still hike every day and compete in triathlons, as well as Nordic skiing, and the sister of a triathlon competitor, her background is in running. In fact, she started running in junior high school and won a partial scholarship to college. She also has a resume that resembles that of an diplomat. But for now, she is content to be a world-class cyclist.

New to the Saturn Cycling Team in 2001, Kimberly made her mark as a strong stage race rider. In her first race with Saturn, she became the first American woman to ever win the Tour de Suisse. She has won or placed highly in races all over the world. She earned an MA in political science-environmental policy analysis from the University of Denver and a BA in French and international economics from Valparaiso University in Indiana.

When she's not racing, Kim loves reading, running, snow shoeing, snow boarding and hiking. I asked her if she ever thought of working for the White House. "At first, in school, I thought I could. But I love Colorado, though. I love the laid-back atmosphere, the mountains, the nature.

Bruckner is also a burgeoning tech junky. "I mostly use e-mail. Especially when I'm overseas. I love downloading music to my mini-disc player: Elton John, Eurotechno music, Led Zepplin. I have a Toshiba laptop. It's new! We were going to get DSL, but Chris and I are never home. I have a Sony mini disc player. I taught myself how to use it . . . I did word processing through my jobs. I listen to music on the plane or when I'm alone. Plus, when I'm not racing, I'm supposed to relax. So, we all stay off our feet and play on the computer."

She has definite opinions of whether she has to conform to the media's expectations for women to be "sex kittens", like a Gabriella Reese. "I don't see it in cycling, it's not that high profile. Lots of times, you can't even tell who's who with the helmet on! Anyway, Saturn would frown on that. They treat us in a respected manner. They're a car company, it's a healthy image." She mentions that Saturn also has a hand in protecting her privacy. "People follow our personal lives more than you realize. It's a good reminder to make a good impression when we're out, when we're in team clothing. Saturn is careful with our privacy. They tell me when somebody is trying to contact us through their web site."

The Russian Consulate Entertainment Law Conference ~ by Steven Masur

Masur & Associates, LLC. smasur@masurlaw.com. www.masurlaw.com

"Cyber Scene" supporter Steve Masur sent in this report on the Russian Consulate Entertainment Law Conference. "It was great!" We felt it only right to publish his full and witty report...

Folks, this is not a show to miss, next time it comes through town next year.

First of all, the space--this is one beautiful building, for anyone who has not seen it. It makes you feel as though you are in St. Petersburg. There was an opening reception and art show--and the content of the show was top notch. I learned directly applicable things about publishing deals, Visas for entertainers and business people and doing productions in Russia and other foreign countries. Lou Perlman, instigator of such little known bands as N'Sync and Natural gave a detailed point-by-point description of exactly how his business works, as well as a lot of insight into how to make money in the musical-tour business.

The networking was awesome. What I learned is that there is an industry there that should not be ignored by those of us trying to make a living off of this business of entertainment. Even ignoring the themeparks, which are a large draw for artists of all stripes (because of the cash to be made there), Miami is a hub for bands on tour (one of the reasons Perlman started his company there), as well as an interconnect to South America and the Latin entertainment market. I got an inkling of the potential of this when I went to MIDEM Miami in 1998, but this show showed me the real potential.

Then to polish it off, there was a reception with full Russian finger food and caviar and a piano recital by Richard Nanes, who I might add, is D**N GOOD and to be witnessed whenever possible at other venues. Needless to say, I fully enjoyed myself, and while many other revelers drank themselves under the table, I myself did not!

It suffices to say that this "ain't no normal PLI event." Fun was had by all and one (me), and the cultural exchange was not only between Russian companies and lawyers here in New York, but also between all the Florida-based entertainment attorneys and industry people who came up to New York for the event.

...AND you get massive CLE!

Don't miss it next time, folks, because the loser will be you.
