Foundation Names Harper as Adjunct
The Progress & Freedom Foundation has named Jim Harper, founder and principal of PolicyCounsel.Com, an Information Age public policy consulting firm, and the Editor of Web-based privacy think-tank Privacilla.org, as an adjunct fellow. As such, Harper will research privacy issues, particularly policy issues at the state level. In addition to his work at PoilcyCounsel.com and Privacilla.org, Harper has served as counsel to committees in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. The Progress & Freedom Foundation, founded in 1993, studies the impact of the digital revolution and its implications for public policy. Sounds right up Jim's alley!

Colonna Names to Entrepreneurs Board
Jerry Colonna, managing partner and co-founder of well-known VCs Flatiron Partners, has been named to its Advisory Board of the Silicon Alley Entrepreneurs Club. SAEC, which started as an online discussion forum and networking group for entrepreneurs in 1999, provides its 3,100 members with such programs as new business-plan submissions and the speaking management guidelines of the Straight-talk. Colonna has been named to Upside Magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People of the New Economy and Forbes ASAP's list of the best VCs in the country. Flatiron Partners is his second venture capital investment firm; Colonna was a founding partner of @Ventures. He currently serves on the boards of directors of AppGenesys Inc., Planet Out Partners Inc., Electron Economy Inc., and Standard Media Inc;, publishers of The Industry Standard magazine and the advisory board of The New York Times Digital. Duchamp Exhibition Welcomes New Media Types
Web artists are going mainstream. The Duchamp Exhibition at the Venice Biennial, running from June 6 to June 11, will welcome several artists who work in new media. They include Mark Amerika, Ken Goldberg, Yael Kanarek, Paul D. Miller, DJ Spooky and Mark Tribe. The exhibition, curated by Cristine Wang, is a traveling show that will stop at a number of cities. Referred to as "Re: Duchamp," the show has already been exhibited in New York City and in various cities in Germany, Poland, Chile and Israel. The "Re:Duchamp Travelling Exhibition" forms part of the "Markers" project, that involves well-know cultural foundations that operate in Venice, such as the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and Biennale Arti Visive, besides the Municipality of Venice itself. It is sponsored by NY ARTS magazine, and will feature the most recent works of Abraham Lubelski and incorporate the work of over 250 other artists. The installation is an assemblage of clotheslines from which are hung all the artwork for viewing at one time. These shows become a Duchampain metaphor of the contemporary art world.

Nurun Names Development Director
Nurun Inc., an e-business solutions provider in New York City, is optimistic about the coming year. So optimistic, in fact, that it has hired marketing veteran Taneshia Nash Laird as development director for its New York City Operations. The position is newly created. Laird, 32, brings to Nurun New York more than ten years' experience in marketing and business development for technology, entertainment and lifestyle projects. She will oversee the agency's new client recruitment and help develop general marketing strategy. Before joining Nurun, Laird headed The M&M Group, a full service marketing and business development consultancy that she founded in fall 1999. Her earlier experience includes a variety of development, marketing and public relations positions, including serving as development director of Alternative Design, a New York design studio, and as vice president of product development and marketing at Posro Media, a media packager that she also co-owned. The White Plains, New York, native earned a degree in marketing management from Baruch College and has pursued graduate work in media studies at the New School. She lives in Princeton, New Jersey with her husband, Roland.

Jensen Joins SportSkill.com
With barely a moment to reflect on his new position, Scott Jensen delved into his duties as VP, business development /chief strategy officer at SportSkill.com. That was December 2000, when the company consisted of the two attorney co-founders and Jensen. In March, the company was acquired by Jackpot.com, an Idealab! company. Then SportSkill.com launched JackpotSports.com, a site that features games - and Reggie Jackson as baseball spokesperson. Scott has taken a hiatus from teaching and speaking, since he's commuting from Santa Monica to Pasadena and working 15-hour days. Try to get out, Scott, to enjoy some of those warm SoCal rays!

Perlman Pledges Allegiance
The Allegiance Group, a New York-based IT staffing firm, has named Audrey Sharp Perlman director of permanent placement. The 44-year-old Perlman was formerly President of Long Island-based Reliant Staffing, a technical recruiting firm. Prior to that she was director for Career Blazers Staffing for 14 years. The move will likely be a good one for Perlman, given that The Allegiance Group was recognized by INC. Magazine as one of the fastest-growing companies in America.

McDermott Lands CEO Spot at Philadelphia Brokerage
Talk about moving quickly. At just 28, Sean McDermott has landed the top spot at Philadelphia Brokerage Corporation, a regional broker/dealer and financial services company which administers over $200 million in assets for over 850 retail and institutional clients. McDermott joined the company in August 2000 and has guided the firm through their recent transition from Frith Brothers Investments into Philadelphia Brokerage Corporation. Under his direction, the company has increased their revenues by over 40 percent in the past four months. Prior to joining Philadelphia Brokerage Corporation, McDermott served as Financial Officer of Turnkey Development Management (Denver, Colorado). He also founded First Credit Corporation (St. David's, PA), a successful electronic transfer appraisal and title search company. A BA graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, McDermott received his MBA in Finance from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Passlogix, developer of software products that secure and facilitate e-business, has appointed Peter Kestenbaum as vice president of business development for v-GO Exchange. Gotuit Snags iCAST Team
An elite team of technology executives from former CMGI-backed video portal iCAST has joined Gotuit Video, Inc. the video subsidiary of Gotuit Media, Corporation. Gotuit Media Corporation holds a portfolio of issued patents on audio and video systems that allow consumers to control the televisio and radio programs they watch and listen to. The new team will spearhead the launch of Gotuit TV, the company's first foray into customized video. Members include Scott Durgin, Chief Technology Officer at Gotuit; Vincent Colella, selected as Vice President of Product Management for Gotuit Video Inc.; and MacFarland Hale, appointed Senior Director of Development for Gotuit. Brian Doe is the new Manager QA Engineering; Greg Read is Principle QA Engineer; Paul Mansfield is Senior Software Engineering; and Jeff Santos is Senior QA Engineer.

Gardner Joins Multex.com
Jason Gardner has accepted a Sales job at Multex.com, selling custom web (ASP) solutions to the financial market. His territory is the Midwest and part of New York, so he's getting ready to rack up those frequent flyer miles. It took Jason just a few weeks to get up to speed on the technology and the market, no small feat, considering that both are highly complex. Multex is a global technology and information services provider to the financial services industry. The company has a stable, multiple-stream business model and an established brand name in the financial online space, garnering #20 in Silicon Alley Reporter top 100 for 2001. All solutions are customized for such clients as Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Putnam, American Express and Deutsche Bank. Nothing like rubbing elbows with the big boys! Razorfish Appoints Larsen
Razorfish, Inc. has named Lance Larsen managing director of its West Coast operations. In his new role, Larsen will oversee the profitability and operations of Razorfish's offices in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Los Angeles, with a focus on client relationship management and business development. Larsen was a client partner for Razorfish, managing client relationships in the West Coast region. Prior to Razorfish, Larsen was the chief information officer of CrystalGate, a Java-based software development company specializing in Web-based collaborative operating environments deployed in the distance learning space. He joined CrystalGate after more then eight years consulting with Montgomery Watson. Larsen received an MBA from Saint Mary's College of Moraga, California. He holds an M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Nevada and a B.S. in Geology from Sonoma State University.

SmartMoney Taps Ari Brandt
Ari Brandt, 30, is taking on a new challenge as group marketing director of SmartMoney. He will oversee marketing for SmartMoney magazine and SmartMoney.com. That means he will be responsible for the integration, brand development, sales support, research and promotion for both SmartMoney properties. Brandt comes to SmartMoney with an extensive background in marketing and media. Most recently with DoubleClick Inc., an Internet advertising solutions company, he oversaw business development for their business network, negotiating and nurturing relationships with partners to maximize long-term revenue for the company. Prior to that position, Brandt spent three years as the director of advertising and public relations at Neuberger Berman, a money management firm.

Mirksy Getting Out
The worst was apparently too much for Mirsky, creator of the infamous "Mirsky's Worst of the Web" site. He is taking down his Silicon Alley shingle and moving to Los Angeles, where he will be writing for the Fox tv show, Futurama. The offer, which came from friends who work on the show, came as a complete surprise to Mirsky. He says he had no plans to leave New York, let alone move to the West Coast. But given the choice of writing Internet ads promoting Pringles and writing for a popular television program, he chose the latter. Mirsky admits that he doesn't know much about Futurama. In fact, he watched it only once. That, of course, will change - once his "confusion," as he refers to his current state of mind, subsides. Best of luck, Mirsky. The Alley will miss you!

Rowan Moves to Seattle
After three fantastic years at T3 Media, Peter Rowan is moving on to new things. He has settled in Seattle at a company called Interactive Strategy. Good luck, Peter!

Dunn 'Up & Coming'
Jim Dunn, President of Philadelphia Brokerage Corporation, was recently selected among the Philadelphia region's top business professionals under 40 years old by the Philadelphia Business Journal in their 11th annual "40 under 40." Dunn, 28 years old, is also managing director of One Maverick Corporation, which manages the operations of two hedge funds with assets of over $20 million. A 1995 graduate of Villanova University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, Dunn is an active public speaker on the effects of the Internet on financial services companies. He serves on the board of directors of Elfreth's Alley, and is a member of the Greater Philadelphia Venture Group and the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, among other professional affiliations.

Schwartz PR Interactive Taps Murrow
Schwartz PR Interactive has named David Murrow to the newly created position of Director. He joins the company from the New York office of Internet Appliance Network, part of the Flatiron Partners¹ portfolio of Internet companies, where he served as Director of Corporate Communications. Murrow will supervise Schwartz PR Interactive¹s technology- and Internet-related accounts, including LookThatUp, iPrint and Penton Media¹s Internet World and Service Provider events. Murrow previously was a Senior Account Supervisor at Edelman Public Relations in New York, working on both corporate and technology accounts, and before that was an Account Supervisor at Gibbs & Soell, managing several technology-oriented B-to-B accounts.

Larry Wasserman is planning to leave LivePerson Inc., on April 20. Two years after joining the site, which provides technology for real-time sales and customer service, Wasserman has decided to take a break, recharge and explore his options.

Segan Joins eTravels.net
Not everyone has written off dotcoms as a viable career choice. Take Sascha Segan. She left a job at ABCNEWS.com to become senior producer of eTravels.net, the upcoming Web site for Expedia Travels magazine. Expedia Travels is a mass-market travel magazine published by Ziff Davis Media; the site is planned as the smartest one-stop travel information destination on the Web. The magazine has a licensing and promotion agreement with Expedia.com, but it is a separate publication. Because of Sascha's departure, ABCNEWS.com is looking for a technology writer. Maguire Exerts Some Influence
Wireless Week has named industry veteran, Joy Maguire, as one of the most influential women of wireless. The finalists were selected from the most noteworthy women whose considerable dedication and determination in the wireless industry have left a memorable impact. As Razorfish's vice president of wireless and mobility solutions in North America, Ms. Maguire is responsible for working with clients to understand the difference in their needs and delivery capabilities within wireless and wired environments. She has been active in the WAP (Wireless Application Protocal) Forum since its inception and she currently chairsits the Specification Requirements Committee. She was selected among 22 other notable women to represent those who have ascended to important positions within their companies. The feature story will profile in the March 26, 2001 issue.

DDB Exec Elected Mayor of Cannes
Bernard Brochand, vice-chairman of DDB Worldwide, has been elected mayor of the Mediterranean city of Cannes. The post will allow the French adman to reign as 'honorary president' over the world's top advertising festival every year. Mr. Brochand, a longtime advisor to French President Jacques Chirac, put his political advertising skills to work during an 18-month campaign for the Cannes mayor's post. His self-funded candidacy included outdoor advertising, direct marketing operations. He used the Cannes harbor as the backdrop for his 2001 DDB New Year's card - and creation of an extensive supporters' network that raised his political profile and later got out the vote during the mid-March election. The well-choreographed campaign paid off, as Mr. Brochand won just under 50% of the vote during the March 18 balloting, giving him control over a considerable center-right coalition that will govern Cannes for the coming six years.

He also worked in the investment banking division of UBS Warburg in Hong Kong and Zurich, and in sales and marketing at IBM. Patricia Clark has gone from VP Sales at Half The Planet to President/CEO Interevco. Her previous posts include VP Sales at Talk City, and Eastern Sales Director at GeoCities. Young Leaves DDB
John Young has decided to leave Tribal DDB, where he has served as Chief Creative Officer and as a member of the firm's worldwide management team. He helped create a 17-office international network for the company. After spending 20 years building highly creative businesses, Young will take some much needed time to "reevaluate what is truly important, to re-energize and to survey new opportunities, new partnerships and, with luck, to relish life a little more fully." One thing he won't be giving up, however, is the chairmanship of the One Show Interactive Awards. He said he is hoping that the awards will prove to be truly inspiring to the entire industry.

Womensforum.com Taps Weil and Chapman
Preparing to launch a major expansion of advertising sales and marketing efforts, Womensforum.com, has hired Stan Weil, a longtime senior executive of Turner Broadcasting Sales and former executive vice president of sales at the Hollywood Stock Exchange, as chief operating officer/general manager, a new position. The company also appointed Emily Chapman, former vice president of strategic partnerships for Learning Network, a division of Pearson PLC, as senior vice president/sales and new business development.

Hartnick Launches Interactive Marketing Consultancy
Kate Hartnick, a Silicon Alley veteran and former vice president of the Strategic Planning Group at I-traffic, has launched Hartnick Consulting as a boutique marketing consulting firm. The firm will concentrate on helping media companies, cultural and educational organizations, and early-stage e-commerce companies use the Internet to grow their revenues, ROI and audience bases. Hartnick Consulting will help its clients to research, develop and execute on marketing plans, media plans, sales strategies, and business development and strategic alliances. The new firm has already landed several new clients, including New School University.

Larry Miller, president of Reciprocal Entertainment, has joined e-bitda's Board of Directors. A respected leader in the digital rights management industry and an expert on music-related technology, Miller has played a key role in positioning Reciprocal as a significant player in the internet entertainment arena. He plans to help e-bidta further establish itself as the gatekeeper in media and technology.

Masio on the Lookout
After nearly four years at CDNOW in strategic business development, Rich Masio will be leaving the Pennsylvania-based etailer soon to live on Long Island with his wife and 5-month-old daughter. Masio has a lot to be proud of during his time at CDNOW. He started the editorial and merchandising groups, led the label/music industry relations and various new business projects. Dimert Joins Razorfish Board
Razorfish, Inc., the global, digital-solutions provider, has appointed Bo Dimert to its board of directors. Mr. Dimert is the former president and chief executive officer of Ericsson Inc. and former executive vice president of the Ericsson Group. He retired from Ericsson in August of 2000. Mr. Dimert joined Ericsson Inc. in 1995 as executive vice president and general manager of Enterprise Networks' world-wide business unit, where he helped generate $1.5 billion in revenue. In 1998, he was promoted to president and chief executive officer of Ericsson Inc., where he helped build a $3 billion business in 1999. Prior to joining Ericsson Inc., Mr. Dimert served in a variety of capacities at Digital Equipment Corporation, including general manager of the Country Group, Nordic Area and managing director for Digital Sweden. Mr. Dimert also spent 17 years at IBM as vice president of sales, large accounts division.

Currie Joins The Warren Group
The Warren Group, an Austin, Texas-based direct marketing company, has named Phil Currie as its vice president of business development. His goal will be to establish and maintain long-term relationships with prospective clients and alliance partners. Currie’s previous posts include the division director of dales and marketing for Victina Systems, an Austin-based technical service provider. Most recently, he worked as a consulting partner with VC-Network, a business management advisory service for early-stage emerging firms. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University and a Master’s degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton.

Spencer Starts Screaming
ScreamingMedia Inc., a leading provider of content solutions, has promoted Steven V. Spencer to the post of chief technology officer for the company. Mr. Spencer has been senior vice-president of technology to CTO, effective immediately. As the CTO, Spencer will be responsible for overseeing the continued build out of the company’s infrastructure technology platform and the introduction and management of new products and services, as well as the companies core content services offering. Mr. Spencer joined ScreamingMedia in April 2000 as head of its wireless division. He has since continued to oversee the wireless division while also assuming the role of senior vice-president of technology and product management. In this role, he has been responsible for the leadership of both the wireless business solutions and the overall business management of ScreamingMedia’s entire portfolio of content solutions.

Brandeis Joins iNEXTV
Jocelyn Brandeis has settled in at iNEXTV Corporation as Manager, Corporate Communications. Brandeis is responsible for assisting with strategic communications planning for iNEXTV, and day-to-day management of external media and analyst outreach.  She is directing all trade show and special events planning. And she's providing counsel and guidance to senior management regarding corporate communications. Most recently she served as Publicist, Trade and Media Relations, Showtime Networks Inc. That's where she coordinated Showtime's publicity efforts for various special projects, events and screenings.

Flooz.com Appoints Berry
Flooz.com, Inc. (www.flooz.com), an e-commerce enabler and creator of the world's first online gift currency, has created a new position -- just for Marianne Berry, former VP of broadband and ISP marketing at Verizon, to Chief Marketing Officer,. Berry has her work cut out for her. She will oversee customer care, loyalty, consumer and business-to-business marketing, merchant marketing, public relations and product development. At Verizon, Berry served most recently as vice president, sales & marketing, Advanced Data Services, where she launched broadband and Internet services, following her successful creation and launch of a co-branded credit card for the telco. In other executive appointments, Flooz.com hired Mitch Lubin, a 10-year veteran of American Express, as vice president of marketing.  He replaces Jack Feuer, who was promoted to vice president of merchant and business development.

Grossman Leaves Zefer
Melissa Grossman is leaving Zefer today. She admits to having a great run and loving every minute of the time she spent building up the company's New York office. But it's time for a new challenge.
