Now here's something that's really neat--choosing what items you want in an online store: Bolt.com unveiled an innovative e-commerce model expected to become the next "category killer" strategy for online retailing. Subject: Another EMAIL VIRUS is out there!!
"And very dangerous. Worm.ExploreZip is a virus capable of destroying data. It enters your system through email. If you don't catch it, it may destroy crucial files on your system.
Experts aren't sure how far Worm.ExploreZip has spread, but email systems at Microsoft, Intel, Symantec, NBC and General Electric were hit so hard that some had to shut down mail servers. That kind of malicious power should not be ignored.
You're a target if you use: Microsoft Windows 95, 98 or NT, Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange for email
Be very careful with email. Do not open email with attachments unless you're certain the sender is safe, and only after you've downloaded protective software.
The worm -- first discovered in Israel -- enters as an email attachment with the name "zipped_files.exe." It's deceptively friendly message reads:
Hi "name of recipient"!
I received your e-mail and I shall send you a reply ASAP.
Till then, take a look at the attached zipped docs.
Bye.
Experts say you should delete it without opening it, and then empty the deleted items file.
If it executes, the worm copies itself to the windows system directory with the filename "Explore.exe" and then modifies the WIN.INI file so the program executes each time Windows starts.
It then uses the infected computer's email client to harvest email addresses in order to propagate itself. But behind the scenes, it plays real mean: searching C through Z drives and selecting crucial file extensions and rendering them useless by making them 0 bytes long. Result: Non-recoverable data or computer system failure.
If you have opened the suspected email attachment, shut off the computer, call tech support, wait, and pray it's not done its harm."
(I received this attachment but did delete it. So make sure you know what you're getting from who out there, folks.)

Now in its fifth year, the Digital Club Festival, formerly known as the Intel New York Music Festival, is the only annual music event to combine the excitement of live music with cutting edge interactive technology. Founded by co-executive producers Andrew Rasiej, creator of Irving Plaza, and Michael Dorf, creator and owner of The Knitting Factory, the Festival finds its niche in creating a large-scale local event that can be accessed by a worldwide audience in real time via the Internet. The Festival website, www.digitalclubfest.com, is the virtual location for visitors to participate in the event and experience how music will be performed and purchased by the wired music fan in years to come. This year, all participating nightclubs will use streaming media technology to webcast live concerts from their stages, reaching thousands of music fans worldwide. While the 1994 Festival was only able to make digital photos and text available to a worldwide audience, in 1998 more than 400 continuous hours of live and archived performances were available on multiple "24 hour channels" along with interviews and online shopping links. British rockers Bush will be among the headliners performing on stages throughout lower Manhattan during the festival, taking place July 20-23 in New York City.

"The growing ranks of interactive services firms received their first report card today, and many of them are being asked to stay after school, according to the 1999 National Benchmark Study of Client Satisfaction with Interactive Services Firms, reported at the Web Advertising '99 conference at the Marriott World Trade Center Hotel. A key statistic from the study showed that more than a third of U.S. companies have terminated interactive services firms before projects were completed because of poor job performance. The survey found that interactive services firms are still not fully meeting their clients' expectations. More than 400 decision makers representing a cross section of United States firms participated in the survey prepared by People | Design | Technology, an independent, research-based consultancy that helps organizations generate better results with their online strategies. The study provides tools to enable interactive services providers and their clients to communicate more effectively and to help ensure that client's expectations are met, according to Lee Wright, founding principal of People | Design | Technology.

Various e-mail lists around the 'Net had been circulating the announcement that the head of Mozilla.org just resigned. Jamie Zawinski was one of the first Netscape employees and he shares, among many thoughts, his open source, open resignation letter. Excerpts include: "We changed the world. But we did that in 1994 and 1995. What we did from 1996 through 1999 was coast along, riding the wave caused by what we did before." "Netscape was shipping garbage, and shipping it late." And his prediction concerning open source: "Open source does work, but it is most definitely not a panacea. If there's a cautionary tale here, it is that you can't take a dying project, sprinkle it with the magic pixie dust of "open source,'' and have everything magically work out. Software is hard. The issues aren't that simple.

The series kicks off with the following projects "Extracted Celluloid," the "Deconstructing Beck" sequel and film music rip-off; the second annual USA Phone In Sick Day. The series will also feature four more projects, including a system for the theft and redistribution of commercialized video art. In addition, RTMARK is unveiling a new section, which currently boasts Diesel's "sawing nude women to bits" ad campaign. The redesign of http://rtmark.com/, another quarterly capstone, features a new project communication system, as well as "appropriations" of corporate websites (http://rtmark.com/shell.html, described.
Amazon.com Auctions:
Well now everybody's getting into it! Amazon.com is offering auction services where consumers can sell anything they want to on the Web site.
Web Site Auctions:
Thanks to Steven Warren (zoecom.com) for pointing out Phoenix Pop's auction of its old web site on Ebay. The SF web design shop has built a new website for themselves, and rather than taking down the old one and letting it gather dust, they decided to auction it off.
Info River Valley
now offers information on new job opportunities for some of their partners on their site. Partners can post staffing and project requirements for interns, contract or full time people and where people seeking such positions can post their resumes.

Gromco And CCM!
GromCo Inc., an Internet startup company running a community of consumer-oriented Web sites, launched CreditCardMenu.com -- an online resource for consumers looking to find the credit card that best meets their needs. The Web site is an improved and redesigned version of the company's ``Credit Card Advisor'' service, which has been online since 1996 and was ranked No. 1 by Infoseek.
Tunes.com In XTC!
Well, we all know the web is the place where you can find links to almost anything you can't find in the mainstream. And Tunes.com, in keeping with its strategy to be "all things music" and "technology agnostic," is now offering XTC's cleverly controversial new song "Your Dictionary" for free, exclusively on RollingStone.com in Liquid Audio format. Due to its controversial lyrics, this song apparently may never make it to the mainstream airwaves, so TVT Records and Tunes.com have teamed up to promote the new album via digital download.
Sputnik's Launched!
Seth Palmer has been a bit consumed lately working on a really kick-ass project while working at Viant ... and now it's live: http://www.sputnik7.com. It's streaming music video entertainment and *warning* you must have a fast computer (PC compatible, 200Mhz Pentium II or better, Mac PPC 604e 166 or better), lots of RAM, Flash plug-in and the RealVideo plug-in. A fast connection is best, but 56K will suffice.
Kudos To Brain Bug!
One of their projects, The Hartford Courant's web site, has been awarded a superior rating of 4 by CNET's Builder.com Critique of the Week. The site launched late last year and is described by CNET as "...clean and crisp, with subtle and consistent use of color, type, space, and well designed headers..." (complete review and interview with BrainBug can be found here)

MININGCO AND IPO. Pied Piper Award of the Week goes to Glenn Hauman, co-founder of BiblioBytes and Membership Secretary of the WWWAC (wwwac.org) group. In response to Salon Magazine's (www.salon1999.com) motto challenge for Silicon Valley, Mr. Hauman, never one to be outdone, rallied WWWAC posters and lurkers alike to coin a motto for Silicon Alley. At the time of publication, at least 23 people responded, including yours truly, with several witicisms. Read all the "wwwacky" posts.

Dance Online has been focusing on developmental aspects of its web site and is working on a large-scale links database so that you may locate any dance site online! Their series of "DANCER X" continues and you can read how Vic's head separates from his body in a half-anaesthetized out-of-body experience with a Pet Shop Boys soundtrack. Members of the WWWAC Writers SIG were chastised for the low turnout at the Wednesday February 3rd meeting on "Go Ask Alice," a sex education and health information site that was developed by Columbia University. The non-profit entity developed a site to address a pressing need of its immediate community. It has, in the process, thanks to the reach of the Web, drawn an international audience. The project has been so successful it has led to a book as well. Unfortunately not many folks got to learn about how health professionals addressed the issue of setting up an effective Web site that would grab the attention of the students it wanted to reach and to hear about the sort of editorial judgments they must make every day.
UniversityVentures, Inc. announced they acquired three new content management technologies from the Cornell Research Foundation. Two of the technologies are novel ways of utilizing visual similarity and the third is a unique application for detecting scene breaks in digital video sequences. Craig Zolan, president, said "this acquisition establishes a strong foundation for UVI's patent portfolio, which we will aggressively augment in 1999." The New York-based firm is building proprietary content management and knowledge management tools based on an expanding portfolio of patented technologies from an extensive network of North American universities and research organizations.
T3 Media announced the promotion of Jessica Safran to vice president of operations and Peter Rowan to vice president of business development. Congratulations Jessica and Peter!
Well, local top creative web shop Razorfish not only has expanded into bright lights, big city town Los Angeles but they have established their new home into the world famous "Binocular Building." The famous building was designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry and sculptors Claes Oldenberg and Coosje van Bruggen. Stay tuned for the open event in May of 1999.
Wired magazine recently reported on the space and its former occupants, Chiat/Day, noting the unique approach the previous occupants took to the creative process. Apparently the Razorfish environment will be very different than the "Tilt-a-Whirl" aesthetic of the past. Typical for RFish, they are redesigning the 2nd floor with the approach to space planning and team building. Two "war rooms" are actually within the famous binoculars (wow!) and a newly redesigned conference room is glass-walled and aquarium-like. (ooh!) Within walking distance to the Pacific Ocean, the 75,000 square foot space will make Razorfish the newest neighbors of entertainment industry heavyweights.
The Let's Talk Business Network (the nation's first customized support service and community for the self-employed) has joined "The Cyber Scene" in its identifying Vancouver, BC as a valuable venue for collaboration and community. They have entered into a license agreement with the HomeBiz Broadcasting Network and Allan Holender to bring LTBN to Vancouver. Holender, a home-based entrepreneur for the last few decades has said he is "honored to be the first licensee and partner of The Let's Talk Business Network."
A fine example of the global network comes from our Canadian neighbors. Ubi Soft will be presenting the pilot for the animated series " Rayman " at Milia on 2/9/99. Rayman is a hero of console and computer games and educational games and "is off again on new, and very animated, adventures!" Ubi Soft develops this product with French design teams, Canadian production teams and American partners to create a multicultural cartoon for the world market. The group relied on outside sources for help in achieving "linear" quality screen-writing equivalent to that found in the game-design of its computer and console products. The new stories, excellent design, variety of characters and places, and their fine modeling have already gone into the interactive follow-ups to Rayman.
In New York we have "Footloose" (on Broadway) and in San Francisco there is the Voice Of Dance community.
